Hoosiers Have a Multitude of Options at Running Back in 2017

Hoosiers Have a Multitude of Options at Running Back in 2017

Morning temperatures are dropping and you can feel a bit of chill in the air. Summer’s hottest days are in the past and schools are back in session. Most importantly, the long wait is coming to an end…college football season is almost here! As part of our extensive 2017 preview content, Hoosier Huddle is breaking down each position for the Indiana Hoosiers as they grind away on the practice field and get ready for the campaign. Today’s preview focuses on a unit with a whole lot of potential but perhaps just as many questions: running backs. Indiana returns only one rusher with more than 48 carries in a season (Tyler Natee had 61 carries last season) and each of the players have an intriguing skill-set that could be somewhat offset by a flaw. It’s a big group, which could be seen as a positive or a negative. IU’s new running back coach, Mike Hart, had this to say about how the lack of a feature back and the depth of this unit would be balanced: “When you have a big group of guys, keeping them fresh isn’t an issue during training camp. We do have a lot of guys and they have to get carries to see who’s going to go out there and be the guy. When you get to the season and get to playing time you always have to manage reps. The day of the 50 carries a game back is over with, I don’t see that happening much. To me it’s just managing during the game once the season comes, when you find out who you have. Until we find out who we have and who is going to be in those positions, you just roll.”

Rivalry Week is the best week in college football. Fans can throw out the records and just get into their team’s game with their rival school. The Hoosiers have one of the better rivalries in the Big Ten with Purdue in the Old Oaken Bucket Game, a tradition that dates back to 1925. This year the Hoosiers are looking to continue their run of dominance over the Boilermakers with a fourth straight Bucket win, a win that would send IU back to a bowl game for the second consecutive season. Here is what the Hoosiers will have to do to beat the Boilermakers.

Officially Official: Richard Lagow to Start in IUFB’s Opener

Without ever officially saying it throughout the offseason, Coach Wilson did hint at Richard Lagow being the guy to ultimately open IU’s season as the starting quarterback in Miami. On Friday, he stopped hinting, and gave Hoosier fans the information they had been dying for all offseason. We have a starting quarterback. And it’s Richard Lagow.

The Hoosiers Are Loaded Again at Running Back in 2016: A Closer Look at IU's Stable of Ball Carriers

The Hoosiers Are Loaded Again at Running Back in 2016: A Closer Look at IU's Stable of Ball Carriers

Since Kevin Wilson and running backs coach Deland McCullough arrived on campus in Bloomington he has always had a solid running back on the roster. Starting in 2011, it was Stephen Houston who ran for 802 yards that season and sits at 10th on the all-time rushing yards list for IU with 2,304. Behind Houston was Tevin Coleman, who would become an All-American and the fifth all-time leading rusher in Hoosier history finishing with 3,219 yards in three seasons before leaving for the NFL. In 2015 Jordan Howard was tasked with filling the shoes of Coleman and continuing the run of great running backs coached by McCullough. Howard, a transfer from UAB, did not disappoint. He ran for 1,213 yards and nine scores in just nine games after being hampered by injuries.

Now, Wilson and McCullough have to replace yet another NFL bound running back for a program that is quickly becoming a hot bed for talent in the backfield under McCullough’s tutelage. This year they do return a 1,000-yard rusher in junior Devine Redding, along with a player Wilson called the best on the team in Camion Patrick, and several talented youngsters who are returning from injury, as well as the hefty true freshman Tyler Natee, and true freshmen Cole Gest and Kiante Enis. So let’s take a closer look at the Hoosiers’ stable of running backs that will take the field in 2016.

Five Questions We Want Answered In The Spring Game

Five Questions We Want Answered In The Spring Game

Fresh off of an appearance in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, the pressure is on this year’s group of Hoosiers to get back to the postseason. With plenty of departures from last year and new additions this season, it will take some time before we really get a feel for what this team will look like. While it is important to remember that a spring game is essentially a practice, we will be watching closely to see if we can get answers to some of the biggest questions that remain heading into the 2016-17 campaign.

Life Without Howard

Life Without Howard

After a couple of weeks of speculation, Jordan Howard has made it official. The standout running back that transferred to Indiana from UAB is foregoing his senior season and has declared for the 2016 NFL Draft. Howard was tremendous while on the field in Bloomington but his season was stagnated by injuries. He ended up with 196 carries for 1,213 yards and nine touchdowns. Much of Howard’s damage was done in the non-conference slate before he was injured in the Ohio State contest but he was able to return to run wild against Michigan in an overtime defeat before leaving early in the game against Maryland. His time on the sideline was frustrating for all involved but it did allow us to witness the emergence of Devine Redding and see the continued excellent work of the offensive line as IU’s running game barely missed a beat.

Now that Howard is officially out of the picture for 2016, what does the IU running game look like for next season? We will certainly preview the running back position in more depth once we get further into the offseason and Spring ball but this should serve as a good first look at “life without Howard” for the Hoosiers.
