Countdown to IUFB Kickoff: 14 Days (Andre Brown Jr.)

#14

The Hoosier Huddle countdown to kickoff is in its final days. We are just two weeks away from the Hoosiers kicking off the 2018 season on the road against Florida International University. Today we will highlight a member of defensive secondary, Andre Brown.

Andre Brown Jr. (Redshirt Junior)

Height: 6’0”

Weight: 200 Pounds

Hometown: Decatur, GA

Position: Cornerback

On the defensive side of the ball, one of the few returning starters for the Indiana squad will be cornerback Andre Brown Jr. Brown made 11 appearances at cornerback in 2017, 10 of which were starts. He tallied 33 tackles, including a career-high 8 in the victory at Illinois. He also had one of my personal favorite plays of the season against Georgia Southern; after a completed pass, he simultaneously wrapped up the receiver and stripped him, held onto the ball and returned the fumble 22 yards for a touchdown. He was IU’s defensive player of the week during the Georgia Southern game and an Academic All Big-Ten selection for the season.

Brown will be excited to know that in 2018 position coach Brandon Shelby believes he’s got the deepest group in his tenure. “I don’t think since I’ve been here the last seven, eight years that we’ve had three groups that can go in and play. I think I feel kind of comfortable with all of them going in there and it hasn’t been that way since I’ve been here.” Brown will certainly find himself in the first of these three groups as one of the experienced, veteran leaders of the cornerbacks. In fact, he will likely be lined up this season against opponent’s number one outside receiver. And with two other groups at Coach Shelby’s disposal, we should see far less wear and tear in the second half of the season. A fresh Andre Brown will be a threat opposing offensive coaches will have to highlight in their game plans all season long.

The 2018 season is nearly upon us! Training camp has begun and the Hoosiers are preparing for what they hope is a return to a bowl game. One feature of our preview coverage is going in-depth on each position group and today, we look at perhaps the deepest and most talented position group on the Indiana roster: the defensive backs.

“Defensive back” is a loose term that, for our purposes today, is going to apply to the safeties, Husky and cornerbacks. The preview is broken up into those individual positions and we’ll begin with the back of the defense, the safeties.
