So you must have seen it. What are these DEI injections and did you leave the theater in disgust?

He's talking about Helen of Troy being played by a black woman and Elliott Page playing a soldier. At least that's what the rest of the MAGA crowd is up in arms over. Neither are in the movie long and unless you're looking to be, won't distract you from the movie.

EDIT TO ADD THIS:

Ryan Holiday had a really good point about everyone getting tied up in the details about fictional characters miss the point of The Odyssey. It's a short clip and worth watching. Ryan Holiday has some really great books on Stoicism and probably has forgotten more on this type of topic than any of us actually know:

Are Greeks MAGA?

Admittedly haven't seen the movie, but Page in any kind of a rough and tumble soldier role is as laughable

I haven't seen it yet, but Sinon isn't a "rough and tumble soldier." His entire role in the saga is to be the treacherous asshole who convinces the Trojans to breach their walls for the horse. Dante had some things to say about him.

I thought it was a good movie and enjoyed it. To enjoy it, it does require you not to get hung up on the accuracy of how fictional characters are portrayed though.

The purpose of historical context matters in historical movies. I wouldn't want to watch Zulu with the Asians fighting Latinos. I wouldn't want to watch a movie about the Revolutionary War with Shermans and Mark VIs battling it out.

So what exactly is your problem? That Matt Damon is of Scottish extraction rather than Greek?

Do you need nationality vs race clarified or explained?

Also, how would it go ever if Page played Kunta Kinte?

Homer did not say Helen was blond. Lateaawr authors added blond. But not Homer

But she was white-armed, which has various meanings.

She was also conceived when one god transformed into a goose raped another god transformed into a swan, who laid an egg, which was then given to and hatched by humans. So I'm not really sure "historical accuracy" is the hang up people are having over skin color.

Are you calling @jdb a racist?

And, wait, your problem with Page now is that a white actor is playing a white character?

Are you just getting angry for the sake of it, with no actual justification? Because it really looks like that's what's happening.

You gonna answer the question about Kunta Kinte?

I still see movies with John Wayne as Genghis Khan, or Yule Brenner as the king of Siam, and a lot of westerns with Whites as indigenous. I even watch humans as hobbits.

Never seen either of those, but I find them all to be cringeworthy. Wes Studi, Rodney Grant, Eric Schweig or Graham Greene do a much better job playing Native Americans than some honkey, a black person, an Asian person, etc. I cannot imagine how bad that movie must be with John Wayne (i just saw IMDB has it as a 3.8!) since he is the most overrated actor of all time. He sucked at anything other than a slow, twang-type ramble.

I want to see close proximity to reality, whether the movie is fictional (e.g., Dances with Wolves, Last of the Mohicans) or pseudo-documentary (Geronimo, Zulu).

The character of Kunta Kinte only makes sense as an enslaved black African. That's his identity. Outside of the context of the slave trade, he's meaningless. Having him played by a white actor would weaken his purpose in the story (unless you completely revamped the story to take place in some alternate time where all the slaves were white, of course).

Sinon is a minor character (not even mentioned in the actual Odyssey, BTW, so the only thing Nolan did against Homer's vision with Page was even include the character in the first place, which is a detail I doubt you or any of the idiots telling you how to think actually knew) who stands for universally understood concepts of treachery and perfidy. The gender or race of the character is entirely irrelevant to the character's role in the narrative.

Your turn: Answer my question. Are you just getting angry for the sake of it without any actual justification?

Look at the cast. Look at historical descriptions and art. You cannot change the past. I want to see the past as it was.

And my problem isn't a big one; it just means I have no interest in seeing it, like most movies the past decade. I may give it a whirl once it hits Netflix or Hulu, given reviews have been favorable thus far, and I have liked some of Nolan's past works. As I stated to Ohio, I have no idea why someone would be that upset that they want to remake it.

A quick note about Elliot Page's part in the move...

What beta does she play?

The Odyssey wasn't the past. It's a myth.

I still have no idea what your problem - big or small - actually is. @oneeyedundertaker seems to think it's a racial thing.

Pretty sure I spelled it out to Marv if you want to read a few posts above. Don't give me Christian Bale as Shaka Zulu or Michael Jordan.

So it is race. Your problem is that a mythical figure who was the child of gods is portrayed by a black woman.

I didn’t say anything about Page playing Sinon.  My issue is with Helen of Troy, & Nolan either insisting on forwarding DEI & wokism or capitulating to the Academy by meeting their DEI woke agenda required for their awards. I just asked about her playing Kunta Kinte to point out the hypocrisy that you happily joined in on with a lengthy word salad confirming the double standards.  Who’s telling you how to think?  You folks are the ones trying to convince everyone that it makes sense it’s a black lady.  I’ll bet you weren’t defending the filmmakers that cast Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell or Matt Damon in the Great Wall, which were just as dubious.  The fact that you think it’s only people with other opinions getting told what to think exposes your hypocrisy, & if you really believe that, your intellect as well…
