He's talking about Helen of Troy being played by a black woman and Elliott Page playing a soldier. At least that's what the rest of the MAGA crowd is up in arms over. Neither are in the movie long and unless you're looking to be, won't distract you from the movie.

Ryan Holiday had a really good point about everyone getting tied up in the details about fictional characters miss the point of The Odyssey. It's a short clip and worth watching. Ryan Holiday has some really great books on Stoicism and probably has forgotten more on this type of topic than any of us actually know:
@big-ryan IMAX 70 just opened tickets for second week of August. Sold out until then. I didn’t love Disclosure Day either. Seems like a lot of people were hoping for this to fail, for some reason, but it’s definitely not.
I saw it in Dolby, but my son and I were seriously considering going to Indy to see it in IMAX 70. That's TBD though.
Coincidentally I am seeing it tonight on IMAX. Not IMAX 70mm though, just normal IMAX I guess. I had to reserve the tickets a week ago since all tickets for the first 5 days (even matinee showings) were sold out by opening night, at least for the IMAX ones.

Admittedly haven't seen the movie, but Page in any kind of a rough and tumble soldier role is as laughable as Cruise playing the 6'4" Reacher.
I doubt I see it in a theatre. Very few movies generate enough interest to make me sit in a theatre. I'm not sure I've set foot in one since Covid.

The organizer, Massimo Pigliucci, philosophy professor at City College of New York said, "Some of them [attendees] looked at Ryan as a keynote speaker and said, 'Wait a minute, that's not Stoicism.'"[4] and Gabriele Galluzzoo, a professor of ancient philosophy at the University of Exeter, said, "There was some skepticism about the personal trajectory of the author, since some of the things in his first book don't seem to be aligned with the ideals of Stoicism."[4]
As for Holliday's take on what "Homer" was "really" trying to show, by referencing Seneca: Seneca wrote about 800 years after the Odyssey was ever written down, and stoicism was founded about 500 years after the first writing of the Odyssey (it existed as an oral poem for centuries beforehand). Saying Seneca's spin on the Odyssey through a Stoic framework was what Homer's intent really was is as historically illiterate, then, as claiming Homer was really writing about some Christian notions.
If you want an intro to Stoicism, by the way, Pigliucci's book, How to Be a Stoic, is good and written for the layman. Do not rely on Holliday. He is an amateur hack.

Holiday is hardly a hack. I don't doubt he has critics, but he knows his stuff. I'm not claiming to personally be knowledgeable about stoicism, but did read Donald Robertson's 'How to Think Like a Roman Emperor' which was pretty solid. Holiday has been writing about stoicism for at least the last decade and a half. Having only read his stuff and Robertson's book, I'd say he has Marcus Aurelius down pretty well.

I knew there was some criticism of Page going in so I was curious about the part. I'd guess 5 minutes out of a 3 hour movie is about right. He doesn't really detract from the overall movie unless someone wants him to. For what it's worth, Page character is a soldier, but the character doesn't require some big strong hulking man to fill the role.

I'm mixed on Nolan. I liked Memento a lot. Same with Inception and The Prestige. Those are Top 25 caliber movies for me. Was not a big Dark Knight or Dunkirk fan, but I'm more of a character-building movie vs. cinematic masterpiece (sans Dances with Wolves) and I dislike superheroes (Deadpool being the exception)
