they got here because of immigration.

That of course is true, but today’s immigration is not in any way the same as immigration of the early 20th century.  The early immigrants accepted America as it was.  They wanted to be part of the American story  and dream. They wanted to protect it. Now immigrants, and many leftists, want to “fundamentally change” (Obama’s words) America.  They reject our heritage.  They proudly claim to be anti- capitalists.  They want to eliminate free expression and free association.  They are separatists and suprematists.

Below is some info from Google's AI on immigrants in 1900. Note, many planned to return home. They moved into neighborhoods of other similar immigrants. More than half didn't speak English. Their religion tended to differ from Americans who were here.

Geographic Origin

  • The Shift: They were primarily from Italy, Russia, Poland, Austria-Hungary, and Greece.

  • The Contrast: This differed from the "old" immigrants of the mid-19th century, who typically hailed from Northern and Western Europe (e.g., Britain, Ireland, Germany, and Scandinavia). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Demographics and Motivations

  • "Birds of Passage": A significant portion of standard immigrants were young, unskilled men traveling alone or with teenage sons. They intended to work hard, save money, and eventually return to their home countries (though many ended up staying permanently). [1]

  • Religious Diversity: Unlike previous waves which were predominantly Protestant, the 1900 arrivals were largely Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, or Jewish. [1]

  • Push Factors: They were fleeing severe economic hardship, land shortages, heavy taxation, or violent religious and ethnic persecution—such as anti-Semitic pogroms in the Russian Empire. [1, 2]

Arrival and Settlement

  • The Journey: They typically traveled in the crowded, inexpensive "steerage" class of large steamships, arriving primarily through Ellis Island in New York Harbor, which processed hundreds of thousands of people annually at that time. [1, 2]

  • Urban Concentration: They settled heavily in large, northern industrial cities like New York, Chicago, Boston, and Detroit to find factory work. [1, 2, 3]

  • Ethnic Enclaves: To survive language and cultural barriers, they clustered into distinct, densely packed urban neighborhoods—such as Little Italy or Jewish communities on New York's Lower East Side. [1, 2]

Socioeconomic Profile

  • Labor Market: The standard 1900 immigrant was predominantly an unskilled manual laborer. They took low-paying, grueling jobs in steel mills, garment sweatshops, meatpacking plants, and construction. [1, 2, 3]

  • Literacy and Language: Roughly half of the immigrants arriving in this era spoke no English upon arrival and had lower literacy rates compared to native-born Americans or older immigrant waves. [1, 2]

Godfather 2 gets a lot of this right.

@hurryinghoosiers any territory that would vote for Democrats is by default excluded from the U.S. They fail the most basic litmus test.  We are already overran with too many dummies like yourself.

Darline Graham is a lightweight but it's still surprising that the SC Senate race is so close.  The RCP average is Graham +2.4, New York Times/Siena has it tied, and Cook has moved it from "likely Republican" to "lean Republican."  Trump is returning to the state tomorrow in an effort to boost Graham's foundering campaign.

@co-hoosier In a single short post, you 1) said you didn't know what I meant, 2) went on to grossly mischaracterize what I said, anyway, and 3) arrogantly suggested I'd be wiser if I'd just pay attention to the wisdom you'd already dispensed.

I don't think my criticism is obtuse at all. I think I have you dead to rights.

So please explain how that fits into your absurd general comment about "today's immigrants".

I for one am thankful for all these criminal immigrant illegals COH is talking about because I’ve never been fitter dancing in the streets on a daily basis, dodging all the bullets that they’re firing every which way.

Thanks for the compliment, but I don’t deserve it.  The wisdom is Rubio’s not mine

Wanting to keep some of their heritage isn't rejecting you're heritage.

I never claimed otherwise.

And there is nothing wrong with being against whitewashing history.  Tell the true history regardless of how warm and fuzzy it makes you feel.

Strongly disagree. This is why we don’t have peace in much of the world. People are still fighting ancient battles. In the US people still act like slavery is a current event. There will always be oppression and victims if we believe it and there will be no escape.

Free expression and free association?  Who is the one trying to force Christianity into schools?  Dictate women's healthcare decisions?  Wants to take away rights from LGBT? Supports murdering protestors?

Calm down. All of these issues have been resolved or are the subject of debate in real time. This is how it should be. It’s how free expression and democracy works.

You're applying the actions of your white supremacists and fake Christians that infest the republican party onto others.

Nope, but even if I were  so what?  You have the freedom to reject, or argue about, everything I say. Is there any room for disagreement about these issues in your liberal world?

.

lol dumb response from a maga moron.

that you disagree with telling the truth about history is bozo level crazy.  No one is saying slavery is a current event.  You're just trying to remain ignorant of the past.  That's your prerogative but students going to class should learn what really happened.

You're the one claiming dems are trying to force their views on others but when I point out that the opposite is true..you claim that is just healthy debate and how it's supposed to work.  So which is it?  or is it just ok for republicans to force their views on others but not ok the other way around?  A hypocrite response.  and how exactly are dems forcing their view onto others?  They aren't pushing anyone to be LGBT, wanting better social services and more affordable healthcare isn't forcing their views on anyone.  wanting to enforce freedom of religion isn't forcing their views... it's trying to prevent conservatives from forcing their views.

There is just as much (if not more) room for rejection and debating in the liberal world as there is in the conservative world.  You just can't see past your bias.

@snarlcakes Please explain how AOC got here because of immigration. That one's a head-scratcher.

I guess, technically, we all did.

I guarantee that is not an argument that snarl has ever put much truck by.

I care about the percentage of foreign born immigrants, where they come from, and who they vote for long term.  And I've been fighting for an independent Puerto Rico for decades now.  You colonizers can kiss my a#$.  Long live BBLs.

You're only "fighting" for Puerto Rico to be independent because you don't want them to become a state and have a vote.  The only reason republicans don't want Puerto Rico to become a state is fear that they would vote democrat.

What exactly is your case for statehood other than political power? The would have the lowest per capita GDP with a bullet. They'd be a massive strain on the Federal treasury. And they carry a ton of resentment towards the U.S. (see below).

  • 1950 Truman Assassination Attempt: On November 1, 1950, Puerto Rican nationalists Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo attempted to assassinate U.S. President Harry S. Truman at Blair House in Washington, D.C. Torresola and a White House police officer (Leslie Coffelt) were killed. [1, 2]

  • 1954 U.S. Capitol Shooting: On March 1, 1954, four Puerto Rican nationalists led by Lolita Lebrón entered the visitor’s gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives, unfurled a Puerto Rican flag, and fired approximately 30 shots into the chamber, wounding five U.S. congressmen. [1, 2]

  • FALN Bombing Campaign (1974–1983): The Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional (FALN), a clandestine Marxist-Leninist group advocating for Puerto Rican independence, claimed responsibility for over 130 bombings—mostly targeting financial centers, government buildings, and corporate offices in New York City, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.
      • 1975 Fraunces Tavern Bombing: On January 24, 1975, a 10-pound briefcase bomb exploded at the historic Fraunces Tavern in Lower Manhattan, killing 4 people (Alejandro Berger, Frank Connor, James Gezork, and Harold Sherburne) and injuring more than 50 others. The FALN claimed responsibility. [1, 2, 3, 4]

  • Other Groups: Groups such as the Ejército Popular Boricua (the Macheteros) carried out island-based attacks against U.S. military personnel and facilities, including a 1979 bus ambush and a 1981 attack on the Muñiz Air National Guard Base. [1]

You claim they have a ton of resentment but can't provide any relevant evidence from this century hmm.

they should be able to choose between statehood and independence.  Being ruled over without a voice is not right.   I seem to recall a revolution happening over something similar.

Those numbers seem crazy and laughable.  But forget the polls for a second and consider where time and money are being spent as Election Day approaches.  Musk threw $158 million (that's a lot of money, even for him) into Texas in an effort to boost and buy Paxton.  Trump's final rallies won't be held in swing states like Michigan but in the ruby-red states of South Carolina, Florida, Kansas and Iowa.   Republicans are clearly worried about traditional Republican strongholds, and that's a bad sign.
