@auburnhoosier As of right now (which is pointless because the roster is not set yet), the lineup would be:

-Burton/Harris/Mustaf/Sherrell (once publicly committed)/Yigitoglu

I think the plan is to get a starting caliber 2-guard and then Darren Harris and Jaeden Mustaf are battling for a starting spot with the other one coming off the bench.

Yes, but still exciting to think about.  The portal hull is already much better than I expected.  Hell, I was expecting another mid-major all-star team lol.

Not worried about pace. There are good coaches and great coaches around, but I dont think DeVries takes a back seat to too many of them. We have a career college coach. I think he'll prove to be a good one here. He knows the game. He adjusts to his lineups. Now we got him a lineup!

The slow tempo problem was a combination of factors, one of which stayed out of shape all season and graduated.

Tempo and pace stats are one of the worst most misunderstood stats in basketball. It's main use is to be part of the metric to gauge per possession efficiency. It's not always an indicator of offensive speed of play and has as much to do with defense, and the offense and/or defense of the opponent.

25% of the metric is based on a teams offense. 50% of the metric is decided by the opponent.

Just because a team has a slow pace stats doesn't always mean they have a slow offense. A defense that locks down opponents will cause a slower pace, even if that team runs quick offensive sets.  A team that rebounds well on the offensive end will skew the pace stat as those possessions are extended.

It's also much easier to slow opponents down than speed them up and every decent coach will try to slow down running teams. Big Ten is a slower paced conference due to having some really good defensive teams that do not allow many transition opportunities and have a few teams that want to play deep into the clock.

Though it is generally "accurate" it's not an end all stat to show speed of offensive play. It needs backed by average length of possession and scoring splits showing time of score to better understand how a offense plays, and that may not even be enough as opponent attributes need considered.

MSU is a good example, they run in transition every opportunity they can get but are almost always considered a slow paced team because they play a tackle goon style on defense, don't allow transition, and key on offensive rebounds.

Not saying it's always wrong, it's generally correct but there are always exceptions. It should not be taken as a stand alone stat to determine style of offense.

@gthomas If you are going to coach your own kid, especially beyond youth level, you better be clear-eyed about his skill level and abilities otherwise it's going to go badly. That's why I don't really like it in general, though there are obviously cases where it works.

@ams66 I don't think CDD coaching Tucker was the problem this year. Tucker deferred to Wilkerson for most of the year, and was (I thought) clearly our #2 option. If you think Tucker was misused or took too many shots, tell me how you'd have approached it with this roster? The roster was the problem, but I don't see how CDD used Tucker or that he was not realistic about his talent, as a problem. The problem was there wasn't enough talent, especially tall talent, around him.

Tucker wasn't the problem per se but too many players that were his level of player was. Do you think he's a starter on any of the S16 teams this year?

Yeah, at least on some of them, worst case scenario he's a 6th man on a few of them. He's a heady player who is a solid to very good shooter and not half bad as a facilitator. Depending on the rest of your roster, he's certainly a P4 capable starter. I think the biggest issue for him this past year is being relied on to carry too much of a load (34-35 minutes per game) on a subpar roster build with too many holes.

@ams66 Just guesses... he starts for St Johns, Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, Texas, Tennessee... but your overall point is valid.  He was one of our top 2 players, and probably our most relied upon player, and he likely wouldn't have started for over half the Sweet 16 teams.

He was markedly better than most give him credit for though.  He was a pretty darn good defender and rebounder.  And he helped facilitate the offense very well too.  He just didn't live up to the 2000 point scorer expectations.

solid to very good shooter

40% overall, 33% from three. Interesting definition of "solid to very good."

Aiden Sherrell is official: Jon Rothstein on X: "Sources: Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell has committed to Indiana." / X

Commitment story: Bang! IU Lands Coveted Big Man Aiden Sherrell - Hoosier Huddle

Obviously, this is a huge recruiting win for Darian DeVries and the Indiana Hoosiers.

@gthomas Had to take a lot of forced shots because we had so few other capable scoring options. On a team with a better roster and another inside/outside scoring threat or 2, his shooting likley would've been highly valued and his numbers alot better.

well the being out of shape and making poor decisions was all on him.

Exactly. He was relied upon as the number 1/2 option on a roster that was very limited. On a better roster he doesn't have to press as much, play 35 mpg, and not as much is asked of him. The fact that we had very little interior presence on offense made us predictable and easy to defend, especially our outside shooters.
