Know Your Opponent: Minnesota Golden Gophers

Yes, that’s right, the yearly tradition where alumni from around the Hoosier state and the rest of the world come back to Bloomington to revel in the memories of their colligate days. Ok, so maybe I am glorifying it a tad, however there are festivities galore from alumni tailgates to Greek Life parties.

Oh yea…. there is also a football game!

The Golden Gophers coming to town represents another program that has the upper hand on the Hoosiers historically. While Indiana has a losing record against every Big Ten program, except for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Minnesota is one of the four teams that the Hoosiers win over 40-percent of their games against. I know that’s not what you want to be hanging your hat on, but it is what it is Hoosier fans.

The two schools have played 66 times dating back to 1906, but have not met on the gridiron since back in 2008 due to conference scheduling rotations.  Of those 66 matchups the Hoosiers have walked away victorious 26 times.

The Gophers come into the 2013 matchup on a high after upsetting Nebraska and become bowl eligible. With the Hoosiers desperate for victories with their post-season life on the line here is a bit more about that Golden Gopher team that you might not realize.

The Big Ten has announced that the November 9th match-up between the Hoosiers and the Illini will kick-off at 3:30pm on the Big Ten Network.

This will be the 71st meeting between the two schools.  Illinois leads the series 45-23-2, however the Hoosiers won last year in Champaign 31-17 for the first Big Ten win in Kevin Wilson's tenure at Indiana.

Hoosiers Enter a Critical Two Weeks

Hoosiers Enter a Critical Two Weeks

The next two weeks will define the 2013 Indiana Hoosier football season.  Will this team grab enough wins to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2007? Or will fans, players, and coaches be left saying what if?  Indiana returns home Saturday to face a red-hot Minnesota team coming off an impressive 11-point win over Nebraska.  Meanwhile the Hoosiers are riding a two-game losing streak and coming off a bye week where hopefully they have figured out a way to shore up a defense who looked ghastly against Michigan.

Bye-week Blues? We Have You Covered

Bye-week Blues? We Have You Covered

Having Bye-week blues? Don’t worry the Hoosiers will be back in action next week as they take on the Golden Gophers for Homecoming.  To pass that time here are three Big Ten games that you should keep an eye on this weekend.

1.  No. 24. Nebraska (5-1, 2-0) at Minnesota (5-2, 1-2) Noon, ESPN- Minnesota returns home after an upset win in Evanston last weekend and Nebraska is just half a game back of Michigan State for the Legends Division lead.  As a Hoosier fan, you will probably be locked into how Minnesota is playing and whether or not Philip Nelson will get the nod over backup Mitch Leidner at the helm for the 122nd ranked passing attack in the nation.  Minnesota is not inept on offense however, they do rank 28th nationally running the ball.  Nebraska will look to take over TCF Bank Stadium and continue their winning ways against a team that has lost its head coach and may have to start Philip Nelson at quarterback.
