Game Wrap and Reaction: Michigan State 40 Indiana 31

Opponent – Michigan State Spartans

Location – Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, MI

Why They Played – The Hoosiers and Huskies play annually as members of the Big Ten East.

What the Game Meant – Indiana performed admirably, particularly on offense, as Michael Penix showed the potential to become a bonafide star. However, the Hoosiers made a couple of critical mistakes and ultimately came up short. The loss dropped them to 3-2 and Michigan State improved to 4-1 and kept the Old Brass Spittoon.

Poor Finishes to Halves Ultimately Undo Indiana’s Upset Bid

Poor Finishes to Halves Ultimately Undo Indiana’s Upset Bid

On the game’s first drive of the day, a sure pick six went right through the hands of Bryant Fitzgerald and fell incomplete. Looking back, this was a terrific foreshadow of what was to come for Indiana’s defense for the remainder of the day: close, but ultimately falling short at the game’s most critical moments.

Matchup to Watch: MSU QB Brian Lewerke vs. Indiana's Containment on Defense

Matchup to Watch: MSU QB Brian Lewerke vs. Indiana's Containment on Defense

Just like recent seasons, IU has been through a ton already and finds themselves at 3-3 despite it all. But hey, drop all of that, because IT’S SPITTOON WEEK LET’S GO! IU is looking to keep the Old Brass Spittoon in Bloomington for a second straight season, and will have to pull out a win on the road against the 18th ranked Spartans. After a dismal 3-9 year in 2016, Sparty has come back from the dead to hit the halfway mark at 5-1. This will mark the fourth straight ranked Big Ten opponent for IU, which is by far the toughest stretch of any Big Ten team in either division (Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, MSU). Before I jump into the actual matchup to watch for this week, I would just like to point out that it won’t matter if they can’t contain LJ Scott. After a terrible start to the year, one of the nation’s best backs had nearly 200 yards and tallied 2 scores in a win on the road against Minnesota. So as a precursor to the matchup this week, make sure the defense is bottling up LJ Scott before worrying about this next one.

Hoosier fans should know what the Old Brass Spittoon is now, since it is comfortably back in Bloomington for the first time since 2006. The Spartans and Hoosiers renew their trophy game and try and build a rivalry as the series continues in East Lansing on October 21st. This is a game where a win could swing the Hoosiers' season from good to great. Michigan State is dealing with a lot of turmoil both on and off the field as they try and recover from a 3-9 season and a sexual assault scandal that left several key players dismissed from the team. It's been 16 years since the Hoosiers have won in Spartan Stadium, but 2017 could put an end to that streak.

Top Five Quarterbacks Indiana Will Play in 2017

Top Five Quarterbacks Indiana Will Play in 2017

Written By Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

As we march through the summer and into fall camp, Hoosier Huddle will look at the top five opposing players or position groups they will face in 2017. Only players and position groups from teams on the 2017 IU Football schedule are considered.

Today, we start with the Top Five Opposing Quarterbacks. The Big Ten has plenty of great quarterbacks returning in 2016 that we will not cover. Players like Clayton Thorson of Northwestern, Tanner Lee of Nebraska, Conner Roda of Minnesota, and Nathan Stanley of Iowa are not on Indiana’s 2017 schedule.

Indiana does play against quarterbacks who are widely considered on every All-Conference list, the conference’s leading passer, and a couple potential Heisman trophy candidates, so the quality of opposing quarterbacks is pretty solid.
