New Staff Members Starting to Gel as Hoosiers Start Spring Practice

The Indiana Hoosiers hit the indoor field at the Mellencamp Pavilion on Tuesday for spring practice number two. There has been plenty of turnover for the Hoosiers both on the field and in the coaching staff. Head coach Tom Allen has brought in three new on field coaches this season so this spring is seeing how the new coaches are becoming entrenched in the program.

“You try and get their personalities and how you kind of coach in practice. Some of these guys you hire, you haven't worked with, and you haven't seen them in that setting, but we have a lot of great teachers is what I'm seeing. I think that's really, really critical to be able to build our team and just keep getting better.” Allen said after practice on Tuesday.

The Hoosiers brought in Bob Bostad (offensive line) and Anthony Tucker (wide receivers, co-offensive coordinator) on the offensive side of the ball. While Matt Guerrerri will be taking over the defensive play calling as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

The Hoosiers are coming off a 4-8 (2-7) season, so improvements are a must and that’s the goal of spring practice.

“Our number one goal is to improve our technique and fundamentals, especially up front and in all areas. I like the staff continuity that we have, I think we have a really good chemistry which is obviously a huge part of it but that'll just keep growing too.” Allen explained.

One of the keys to improvement this season is the players buying into what the coaches are doing. So far, Allen likes what he sees through two practices.

“I think even if you see it out today with Matt [Guerrieri] here, calling the defense and being in that role, I love his energy. He's an extremely high attention-to-detail guy, he's going to make our whole secondary better, I already feel like we're making progress in that area. I just really love what he brings energy wise. Then on offense, I just think that up front I like what I'm seeing, just the work that Coach [Bob] Bolstad is already doing. It's got a lot more work ahead of us, but I like the start.” Allen said.

IU continues spring practice on Thursday before breaking for spring break. IU concludes their spring practice session on April 15th with their Spring Football Event.
