The prize recruit of the class comes in receiver Jaquez Smith. Smith amassed 27 total scholarship offers during his recruitment, most notably from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Tennessee. He is a 4-star recruit and the Hoosiers’ highest commitment of the class, the fourth highest rated all time.
His senior year high school season is still going on, but in his most recent action Smith caught four passes for 37 yards and a touchdown in Westlake’s (10-1) 55-13 domination of Richmond Hill.
Smith’s best attribute is his ability to get separation. He’s not the fastest receiver, but rather gets his work done through his crisp route running and by using his size to consistently separate. He’ll join a great group of receivers that Penix and Tuttle will have available to throw to but should still see time early in his career.
National Recruiting Editor Brandon Huffman of 247Sports said of Smith: “Trusty receiver with good size and range, strong hands and crisp route running. Able to get yards after contact, difficult to press and superb play strength to catch passes. Good body control and ability to adjust to throws, make the catch, then cut and go. Not a true burner but gets consistent separation. Projects as multi-year Power 5 starter and third-day (4-7 Round) NFL draft selection.”
