Following a long offseason filled with roster adjustments and intense winter conditioning sessions, Indiana Football is ready to step back onto the field. Fall camp has arrived, signaling that the anticipation for the 2024 season. The excitement is palpable as the Hoosiers gear up for the upcoming season.

Curt Cignetti, entering his first season as Indiana’s head coach, brought good news. Speaking at Lucas Oil Stadium, he confirmed that the team is heading into fall camp in excellent health. This positive update is especially significant, considering several vital players missed spring practices due to injuries. Now recovered and ready to contribute, these athletes are set to play crucial roles in the team's success this season.

Lanell Carr Jr., DL

Lanell Carr Jr. is gearing up to be a significant force on the field this season. Known for his versatility, Carr played a hybrid role last year, switching between defensive end and outside linebacker in the bull position. His last season was marked by impressive stats, including 33 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and two pass breakups across 10 games.

Carr’s knack for disrupting offensive plays and his substantial experience make him an invaluable asset to Indiana’s defense. Having recovered from his injury, Carr is more determined than ever to boost the Hoosiers' defensive performance this season, aiming to help his team reach the College Football Playoff.

James Carpenter, DL

James Carpenter brings a wealth of experience from his time at James Madison University, along with a set of impressive stats. Last season, as a defensive tackle, Carpenter racked up two fumble recoveries, four pass breakups, four sacks, nine tackles for loss, 53 tackles, an interception and one forced fumble.

These achievements earned him a spot on the All-Sun Belt second team and recognition as a College Football Network Honorable Mention All-American. Carpenter's transition to Indiana is expected to significantly strengthen the team’s defense, particularly given his history of leading the nation in run defense at James Madison.

Jailin Walker, LB

Jailin Walker, another standout from James Madison, is poised to impact Indiana’s defense substantially. Over the past three seasons, Walker started 20 games and played in 32, amassing 61 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and 1.5 sacks.

His consistent performance and solid experience render him a critical asset for the Hoosiers. Walker’s existing synergy with fellow transfer Aiden Fisher is anticipated to bolster the defensive unit further, bringing a proven record of success from their previous team.

Venson Sneed, DL

Venson Sneed’s return could begin a breakout season for Indiana’s defensive line. Last season, Sneed played primarily in a backup role but made a noticeable impact. Throughout 12 games, he recorded five tackles and a forced fumble. Despite limited playing time, Sneed’s contributions were valuable, showcasing his potential to be a key player for the Hoosiers.

Standing at an impressive 6-foot-4 and weighing 265 pounds, Sneed has a formidable physical presence on the field. His size and strength make him a challenging opponent for any offensive line. With improved health and a renewed focus this season, Sneed is poised to take on a more significant role within the team. His recovery from injury has been closely monitored, and all signs point to him being in top physical condition as the new season approaches.

This season, Sneed is expected to transition from a backup role to a more prominent position on the defensive line. The coaching staff has high hopes for his performance, anticipating that he will become a crucial part of the defensive strategy. His ability to pressure the quarterback, stop the run, and create turnovers will be essential for the Hoosiers' defensive success.

Nick Kidwell, OL

On the offensive side, Nick Kidwell’s return is set to fortify Indiana’s offensive line. Kidwell joins Indiana from James Madison University, bringing extensive experience from 54 games played and 32 starts over five seasons. His vast experience and proven track record make him a valuable addition to the Hoosiers.

Last year, Kidwell's season was cut short due to a significant injury. However, he was granted a medical hardship waiver, allowing him to extend his college football career for an additional season. This waiver gives Kidwell a rare seventh year of eligibility, an opportunity he is eager to make the most of. Despite the setback, Kidwell’s previous performances have been stellar. In 2022, he was named to the All-Sun Belt second team, and in 2021, he earned a spot on the All-CAA first team. These accolades highlight his skill and dedication on the field.

Kidwell's return is especially crucial for Indiana, as the team has lost several key offensive linemen to the transfer portal. His presence is expected to fill these gaps and provide much-needed stability and experience to the offensive line. With his background and leadership qualities, Kidwell is expected to perform at a high level and elevate the performance of those around him.
