The rumors of this move have been swirling for weeks and it started when the voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer hinted at the move in a recent radio interview. On Thursday, Donaven McCulley was seen at a pool party at head coach Tom Allen’s house with the wide receivers group. On Friday, McCulley’s position on the official roster was switched from QB to WR.

McCulley started four games and played in seven games at quarterback in 2021 after both Michael Penix and Jack Tuttle were injured. McCulley never found his footing at the position and as the season wound down it seemed IU did not trust him to throw the ball as he was replaced by Grant Gremel in obvious passing situations.

McCulley completed 35-of-85 for 475 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. On the ground rushed 64 times for 135 yards with two TDs.

IU had a handful of wide receivers leave the program after the 2021 season and there is a clear need to rebuild depth at the position. This is not the first time IU has moved a quarterback to wide receiver. The most recent success was with Donavan Hale, who came to IU as a quarterback and become a very solid receiver for the Hoosiers.

McCulley has the athleticism to become a solid wide receiver and the hope is he can be a more explosive Hale. He can take a hit as well.

Can he make the transition and become an impact player? Only time will tell.
