The Indiana Hoosiers continued to load up in the secondary as they added Maurice Freeman to the 2021 class. Freeman, a safety from Chesapeake, Virginia that checks in at 6’0” and 190 pounds, is the 13th member of the class, and second commitment of the day, as he joins fellow safeties Larry Smith and Audrey Burks in the incoming group. Freeman chose the Hoosiers over Illinois, Pittsburgh and Ole Miss and he is listed as an 88 on 247Sports.
Freeman announced his decision on Instagram Saturday afternoon and released the followoing statement on Twitter:
First and foremost, I just want to take the time to thank my mom, my family, my friends, my teammates and everyone who helped me throughout this process. I want to thank God because I never thought I would make it this far without him blessing me with the ability to play the game that I love. 100. I also want to thank Coach Scott, Coach Redd and all of my coaches that helped me get this far into my career!! With that being said, I’ve been thinking hard about this lifetime decision I’m making but it all comes down to this and I will be continuing my education and football career at…Indiana University!! Respect my decision
Freeman spoke to Peegs.com in early July about why the Hoosiers were a strong choice for him. “I’m loving Indiana right now and the coaching staff loves me. I’ve been talking to Coach Allen. I am really close to Coach Teegardin. Coach Allen is a good dude, he’s a good dude, great dude actually. I can tell he’s a great coach.”
Freeman felt the staff loves the versatility and the mindset he brings to the field.
“They really like the way I hit and how I play angry. They also like how I can move around and play around and play different positions on the field. They believe I can play safety and I could also play outside linebacker,” Freeman said.
In the 2019 season, Freeman had 55 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, five forced fumbles, four recoveries and one interception. His highlight film showcases the prospect from Oscar Smith High School as a hard-hitter that figures out a way to get to the ball and make plays. Five forced fumbles in a season for a safety is incredibly impressive. He was a top target at safety for coaching staff for quite a while and they will surely be thrilled to land another commitment that will ensure the secondary remains well-stocked with talent for the foreseeable future.
