Curt Cignetti Staff Profiles: Cornerbacks Coach Rod Ojong

Written by: Nate Comp (@NathanComp1)

Curt Cignetti’s new staff at Indiana is complete. There were three categories in Cignetti’s hirings: retaining old members of the Indiana staff, bringing members of his James Madison staff along with him, and external hires. Today we’ll highlight a member of the latter category, cornerbacks coach Rod Ojong from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Ojong began his career in coaching at Monmouth College, his alma mater, where he was a two-year letter winner and team captain at linebacker. His next move was to Lindsey Wilson College, where he coached outside linebackers and was the assistant strength and conditioning coach. The Blue Raiders finished the season ranked 18th in NAIA, though it was just their fourth year at the NAIA level.

In the next four years he saw stints at three different schools, first West Georgia, then his first FBS stints at Memphis and then North Carolina. He then returned to the FCS ranks, spending time at Austin Peay and Furman.

In 2020, Ojong coached at Georgia as a defensive analyst. The Bulldogs went 8-2 and won the Peach Bowl. He then moved to Buffalo where he coached safeties and defensive backs. Buffalo was bowl eligible in 2022 and led the MAC in interceptions. He also helped lead the top recruiting class in the MAC in 2022.

His most recent job was with Charlotte where he served as the defensive backs coach. The 49ers went just 3-9, but Ojong’s secondary did force 11 interceptions.
