From AOC’s education program quoted above:

“Community-Centered Approach: She emphasizes that educational policy works best when shaped by the lived experiences of local parents, educators, and community organizers.”

You absolutely don’t want community centered education in the inner-city.  Multiple generations of badly educated parents  and badly educated leadership is part of the problem.

@hoot typically if you want bad outcomes combine blacks with blue leadership.  The arena is of no moment. Schools.  Crime.   Etc.   The post tho from top to bottom is spot on.  It’s not a programs problem. It’s not a money problem.  At some point it’s a people and poor leadership and culture problem.  Dems won’t address because they are today some combo of stupid corrupt inept and desirous of obtaining the votes of those they pander to

going to the urban centers and saying Lequizzy’s grades are bad because dad is mia and mom you aren’t home to review his homework. Oh you work nights to put bread on the table. Got it. Understood. Then why does lequizzy have four other siblings under seven.  Oh and Letron. Your oldest was with the 14th street bloods last night. Cops think he might have been involved in a shooting.  He got that gun at bass pro shop right ?  It’s properly registered right.  And why was he involved in a shooting?  Doesn’t he know that life is valuable?   Oh the gun laws are wrong.  Got it.

people run to the burbs to get away from blacks and blue leadership. The latter you can hate and get by with but if there’s a bunch of blacks forget it. “Teen” takeovers aren’t good for anything

but Dems won’t fix the culture. Just piss money away on programs with shitty outcomes.  Blacks can do better. Can do anything. But they are enabled.  And the victimhood has to stop

@hoot I always appreciate you hoot. My defacto second daughter my daughter’s besty) came from a shit home in the city.  Little black girl. Mom’s a waitress. Has two other siblings. Four people in a one bed apartment.  Mom was determined to get the kids in a good school district. Met my daughter in kindergarten. Stayed at my house most nights throughout grade school. Now is thriving at an elite high school full of famous alums where the kids go to great colleges.

it ain’t the color of the skin. It’s the culture. The community. Dogshit leadership.   Dems aren’t getting better. They’re only getting worse. I can vote blindly. R.  Top to bottom. Never thought that day would ever come

Visit this site, you can see standardized math and reading scores for 4th and 8th graders by state in 2024. Toward the bottom in all are West Virginia and DC. In 3 of the 4, DC is slightly ahead, but it is so close I wouldn't call it statistically significant. DC is Black and urban; West Virginia is over 90% White and one of the most rural states.

It is a truism that overall, poor children do worse in school (overall, some individuals vary) than wealthier children. It doesn't matter if they are White, Black, Republican, or Democrat.

It is also true that poor Black children do worse than similar-income White children. This link says that in overall testing, wealth alone accounts for "34% to over 60%" (depending on subject) of the total gap between White and Black. So there is clearly more to do in the Black community. But just solving the overall issue of poorer children being less educated would eliminate from a third to over half of the issue. That would be a pretty good start, would it not?

So let's figure out why, overall, poorer children find school more difficult.

BTW, Dolly had a great idea for this. Try to get kids reading early. Everything I have read indicates that 1) having books in the home and 2) being read to make huge differences in the likelihood of success. So kudos for her efforts to help kids learn. It would be great if more people pick up on that. My kids, on the last day of school, were taken to a bookstore and told they could buy any book they wanted. But it has to start sooner, like Parton's program. But the sad reality is for a lot of kids, if it involves a parent simply crossing a street to get a free book, that kid isn't getting a free book.

@drjb nailed it.

When Mike Royko stated..

Show me the worst school districts in Chicago, Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, and I will show you parents who should not be raising a Chia Pet, much less a child.

What did Mike Royko nail down, the fact these were Black parents, or was he calling attention to areas under the control of Democrats, or both?

Why do similar income whites perform better than blacks?  Why do similar income Asians perform better than whites?

@arthur-dent I agree with most of this. Twenty points out that my perception of all things is somewhat colored by Stl. And he’s right. The poor app scores is a culture problem not unlike blacks.  What’s being inculcated?  Where are the similarities?  Being dumb?  In survival mode?  Missing parental involvement?  Parents who don’t know better.

I gave the example of my daughter’s buddy’s mom. She’s a mess.  In addition to housing and feeding her child and providing more free legal work to multiple of her bfs than anyone should she gets it.  She moved to a hood with phenomenal schools and worked double shifts to rent an apt. She got her kids friends that you want for friends. Look around at your friend group. It matters. Big time. She gets it.

and for me that’s everything.  It’s not more money. It’s not more gov. It’s certainly not backing vapid blinkard Dems like stay at home Pete and AOC and the Dem party. And it’s not more programs.  It’s having one parent. You don’t need two. One. Who gets it. And advocates for their baby. And pushes. Bc when the community who isn’t stupid sees it they will help. I would pay my daughter’s buddy’s college tuition if her mom asks or the kid needs it without thinking about it for a second.

Dumb thread. Dumb responses. Poor analysis. Bad all around. Talk about the shallowest of pools of discourse and those still here wonder why everyone left.

Murt hit part of it and alluded to the other.  Culture and parents who are involved.

Culture, with that tradition, and involvement are important. What I am going to suggest is that some of this was damaged in Black society.

I saw a documentary on trying to increase swimming rates among Blacks (IU's Lilly King was both in the documentary and a panelist in a moderated discussion after). The film's creator said most American slaves came from a region in Africa that uses water frequently, and that includes swimming. But it was illegal in the South to teach slaves to swim, it greatly increased the ability to escape. So it was something lost to the culture in America. Even after emancipation, public pools in the north even didn't allow Blacks.

I theorize education is similar. Certainly not entirely. Slaves were not to be educated. Blacks were meant to be muscle, that is all. Then during Jim Crow it was not much different. So generations of Blacks had no reason, none, to value education.

Which goes to my Appalachia point, Whites who have had no reason to value education for a long time and do below average as a whole.

I read a Malcolm X speech. He was trying to get Blacks to protest more and said that while they could get thrown in jail, it doesn't matter because they live their fay-to-day lives in jail. Sure, some hyperbole but some truth. Too many Blacks refuse to believe they can escape. Growing up I saw it with friends who were poor White. No way out, why try.

@bar-down , White flight began long before the complaints you have. Soros bail and others are new. There were still Republican mayors in 1950-75 when White flight was at its peak. . So, why did Whites leave Marion County? In some areas of the country, it began as early as 1900.

I am not at all disagreeing that Black parents, even non-parent adults in the "takes a village" theory, need to step up. We need more involvement, we need them reading to kids and demanding the kids try to learn. But just shaking our heads with a, "it's their fault" isn't likely to solve anything. Nor to another point made by a poster earlier, I am not sure the government has the power to tell people they cannot procreate. The government with that kind of power concerns me. I spoke with people at a dog boarding facility and asked how they did their daycare, did they put all the rowdy dogs together. They said no, all rowdy feed off each other and it gets too crazy.

There is no good way of integrating schools. Sadly, that seems to me to be the answer. Put these kids in with kids who believe school leads somewhere. Maybe allowing the feeling hopeless in with the hopeful will raise the hope.

Maybe someone with deeper pockets than Dolly will find a way to further leverage her book program. Kids can come to a facility once a month to get a new book, and by even semi accurately describing the last book they get a $10 gift card. For really young kids, maybe allow the parents to as that indicates the parent may have read the book. Restrict it by zip code so Carmel kids aren't popping down to Center Township or rural Appalachia. No idea if it would work but I don't see why a pilot would be a bad idea.

Building reading, writing, math in the home I think should be the goal. Now how?
