Atterbury has already been designated as a detention center. Irony that it was used most recently for Afghani refugees.
These detention centers might end up losing GOP everything they've gained the last few years. I know more than a few people that voted for Trump, and other GOP downticket candidates like Braun, that are 100% off the wagon because of the things ICE is doing. They're committing one of the worst political errors possible, taking a winning issue and turning it into a losing one...and they're doing it unbelievably fast. There aren't enough "worst of the worsts" to make up for the stories like the one with the Purdue student.
I don't think there's anything wrong with actively searching for undocumented people, especially the ones that aren't following our laws. But how you go about that, and what you do when you suspect you've found one... that's where ICE is losing very large chunks of 2024 GOP voters.

Should we put them up in a Hilton?

Jet,
Why are you asking North? His post was about how voters, some who were GOP Trump supporters back during the election, feel about situations like the Purdue student's treatment.
BTW, I haven't seen you weigh in on that yet. Are you okay with it?
.
@bulk-vh i don't think that's jet. i think it's that sweet sweet silence.
@mcm666 I think I was wrong in that assessment. Come on, one eye, fess up
@bradstevens i've already asked him. obviously an accomplished poster. if not jet or that sweet sweet silence i wonder who. he might like his role as the stig!

I don't get sweet silence vibes. I get a little bit of a restrained Lucy vibe though.
Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.

@iunorth You're spot on with your assessment. Enforcing immigration laws is actually pretty popular on both sides of the aisle but the ham-fisted and cruel way the Trump Administration is going about it is deeply unpopular. This was entirely predictable, especially when they put guys like Tom Homan and Stephen Miller in charge of things.
Essentially closing the southern border is a popular thing. What ICE is doing isn't. For the most part, Americans don't have the appetite for the 'Show Us Your Papers!' fascist crap.
[It] will house some of the “worst of the worst” criminal aliens
oh, mixed in with...
-a few straight A Purdue pharmacy students who never did anything wrong,
-your generic green-card-holding hispanic who happened to visit Home Depot at the wrong time,
-and the random US citizen with brown skin taken in for having an accent and looking foreign, to help fill a monthly quota.
All rounded up by non-uniformed plainclothes thugs who refuse to identify themselves, refuse to show any ID, refuse to follow due process, and force non-criminals into unmarked cars while refusing to disclose where they are being taken and for what Trumped-up offense.

Because I’ll ask whoever I want whatever I want without concern for a poster such as you. But mostly because if North & his buddies are talking in depth about their feelings on how illegals &/or suspected illegals are being handled, enough that he can share their displeasure, perhaps they have bothered to do what you never would, discuss what some alternative solutions might be, beyond just whining about anything Trump does.
As far as the PU student, the crux of the matter is what the status of her visa truly is. If expired, I condone her being detained until her status & intent can be resolved. If she was wrongfully detained, we should issue her a sincere apology & graciously accept her gratitude for being able to live & study here as a guest of this great nation. Generally speaking, I’m not concerned with the treatment of illegals & subscribe to Teddy Roosevelt’s take on immigrants.
“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

how can you write this with a straight face. the dems LITERALLY created this problem over their bullshit policies. i swear you and others live an existence adjacent to actual reality.
@oneeyedundertaker Didn't get that far. FAFO is a popular moniker nowadays for MAGA folks. I'm seeing, and I suspect, these Gestapo esque tactics will lead to some serious "finding outs" for GOP candidates in many areas, that don't publicly distance themselves from many of the ICE practices, including the detention centers. And there won't need to be alternative solutions provided by those candidates opponents. It'll basically just be, "I'm not in favor of Gestapo tactics." And that'll be good enough.
All guesses on my part. But I don't think there can be any question the ICE methods, if they continue, will politically hurt MAGA types that support it, more than it'll help them. At least with the voting blocks that will decide contested areas and elections.
@stollcpa agree. people care in an awwww that's a shame sense.
