Vance is weird.  Not stupid.

Running in '28 is quite likely the best shot he is ever going to have at being president, but if doesn't get the votes in the '28 primary, he has another legitimate shot in '32 if whomever gets the Republican candidacy loses to the Democrat.

If Rubio gets the nod in '28 and Vance agrees to be VP, then he doesn't see the presidency until '36, and I guarantee he doesn't want to wait that long.

A lot of MAGA doesn't think much of Rubio.

Watch the Joe Rogan interview.

Sharp, mentally quick, excellent sense of humor. Open; Didn't shirk from answering questions.

In an alternate universe, where competent administration is valued over perceived charisma, DeSantis would be the front runner.

To answer your original question... a lot will depend on how the next 2-3 years go.  We're in a whiplash environment.  So if Trump continues alienating people the next couple years, and if various things don't improve, really any democrat will have some tailwinds against Vance.  If "things" that are important to voters are better come election time, and Trump hasn't scorched earthed all the non MAGA voters, then it won't really matter much who the DNC nominee is, Vance/Rubio would win.

If Trump leaves the door open though by continuing to be his douche bag self, and really not actually improving much of anything, for the voters that will determine the election... THEN, the Dems just need to figure out how to get behind someone like Shapiro, Beshear, Moore, Kelly... I don't know how likely any of those guys are, but any of them, with a well run campaign, would likely thump a Vance that would be anchored by anti Trump sentiments.

If I'm predicting...  I think Trumps Presidency will erode over the next few years.  He's quite obviously declining cognitively.  There are quite a lot of indicators pointing to soft economic conditions, maybe even recession conditions.  And Trump is not equipped, at all, to handle that.  You can't just bankrupt a country, not pay their contractors, and start it up again down the road...  I also think we have 2-3 years of really, really ugly political discourse ahead.  Trump will provide quite a lot of kindling for that fire.  But so will the woke mob.  Most voters will be pissed off and ready for something different.  Obviously different from Trump, but also different from what the narrative has/had been in their own party.  Despite the anti Trump mood that will be similar, if not more intense, than what it was in 2020, I think Trump will still have enough power to ensure Vance is at the top of the ticket, assuming Vance stays vocally loyal to Trump through the erosion.  Other side?  Who the hell knows.  They've proven to be spectacularly awful at picking leaders the last 10 years or so.  Maybe AOC type if the Trump sentiment is bad enough?  Maybe more of a moderate if not.
