Question Did I overreact?

Wife is out of town for work until thursday.  A fly got into the house and when I went to bed around 10:30 last night, it was buzzing around the room.  Tried for an hour to get it, shoo it out of the room, open windows. Nothing worked.  Tried to power through it and get to sleep.  By 1:00 a.m. the fly is still buzzing, and I'm still awake.  I get up out of bed, flick on the lights again, and I see that the fly is on the lamp shade at my night stand.  I grab the closest pair of shoes I can find and swing as hard as I can-not giving a lick of the consequences.  Well, I got the fly and literally destroyed the lamp as collateral damage.

The problem is that the lamp was a gift to my wife from her sister.  Sentimental value and all that.  I have 3 potential options:

1. Blame the dog;

2. Blame my wife "you shouldn't have put it on my side of the bed"

3. Fess up.

My reaction is to pick 3, and just say "I was so tired I didn't know what I was doing".

Kick your front door in. Tell her ICE had the wrong address.

The truth shall set you free.

....because you tell her the truth and she will divorce you and you will be free to find a new wife.

Still, you should probably go the honest route.

Find out where it’s from. Buy it immediately online and have it shipped overnight.

No harm; no foul.

Can anyone here play this game?

Lemmie get this right.  Wife is out of town. You are a bachelor for a few nights.  Lamp next to bed gets trashed.  Yeah, go with the fly story. But find a dead fly and put it on the table.

1) is the sister still alive and how long ago was this gift given?

2) do you happen to know the brand and can search for the replacement online? (If you don't know the brand, refer to #1)

Kid 1 graduated and is working and living at home for a year or so.  Kid 2 is home for summer for a couple more weeks and working his internship.

I fessed up to the truth and texted her (she was in meetings).  She responded with "oh. That's a real shame, I loved that lamp that Lauren got me".  Texted with her sister and she is going to send my wife a new one, and I'm going to venmo her the money.  BASES COVERED--except for the proverbial "but it isn't the same lamp" that I will get when she gets home.....

@mark-milton Remember, woman forgive but never forget.  Make sure there's some flowers, dinner on the table, perhaps a litlle nookie.

When you get to my age, the lamp will go to Goodwill.

Increase your gummy dosage.  Sleep will be no issue.

I fully agree with this. Sleep is paramount and sacrosanct. They fly had to go.

Tell your wife to stop putting sentimental value on things. @co-hoosier is right; it's all going to go to Goodwill or get sold in an estate sale sooner or later anyway.

All that said, I'm divorced and without question would have thought the above advice was perfectly acceptable and applicable when I was still married. So do with all that what you will.
