China is perpetually 6-8 months behind us on AI development. They lack the production capability to close that gap. They desperately want access to the chips we currently monopolize. Even if we only let them import chips that are one or two generations behind what's being produced now, that is a massive upgrade for them.
I said nothing to indicate any sort of denial of the autocratic police state that is China. On the contrary, I specifically made reference to it, along with, correctly, Trump's lack of concern over it. Please don't accuse me of being naive because you have problems with reading comprehension.
@goat i get all my news from youtube and instagram. you may be right about your assertion but the level of tech in china, the level of every day tech, absolutely blows away what we have going on here. our cities look like we're living in the 50s compared to what some massive cities in china look like

Don't get me wrong. I'm not imagining China as some backwards peasant country. AI development is hampered by their inability to procure the most advanced chip production equipment, which is produced by a single Dutch company, made with certain key American parts, and therefore subject to strict export restrictions, backed up by a specific Washington-Amsterdam agreement to keep the machines out of China. Until they can get these machines (or produce their own), they will lag behind us on AI. Getting access to at least some of the chips produced in Taiwan would help them lessen the lag.
