Their incentives have always been the same--get reelected. But now, the vast majority seem to believe the way to get reelected is not by coming up with commonsense solutions to problems, but to tell stories to your electorate based on ramping up hatred towards the "other side" and claiming victory even when it's clear you've failed.
I can only assume the politicians believe this is the way to get reelected because they've studied the results and see that these tactics actually work. We see it on this board every day--partisans from both sides hating on the other side, posting only to own the libs or own the MAGAs, and gaslighting about the problems in the world or in their own party.
