I said the same thing soon you will have 30 year olds still playing. My nephew graduation college is less than three years these guys I guess need at least five and maybe even more. NBA 2.0 is all it is now and it will only get alot worse imo.
@kkott He is a very capable backup on this team. He can play in case of foul trouble and also get some minutes so others don't get wore out by the end of the season. Sam is a great pickup for IU.

@gthomas - I genuinely get the perspective and considering the wild wild west we have seen with this stuff, its a valid perspective.
That being said, if you dig into what is taking place, they are at least cleaning up this old man, anyone can play stuff. Its the only thing they are cleaning up so far but its at least a start.
This situation with Alexis (and the football guys) is all tied to this 5-for-5 rule. Once the current classes are out of school, there shouldn't be anyone over 23 years old, playing college sports. Sam played all 4 years since he was a true freshman and never used a redshirt. So although it feels like he's old, he is only 21 years old. He just wants that 5th year, just like everyone else is now getting as we go forward. There are no more real redshirts, players just get 5 years, no matter how many seasons lost to injury. For some reason, the NCAA said the 2022 outgoing senior class was not included in this rule so those players only had 4 years and now that class is fighting for equal rights. ha

5 for 5 is fine. Hopefully if the B10 and SEC do align with the NCAA, and get congress to dig in and start helping govern, it stays in some form.
I think the answer is enforceable contracts...similar to non competes in business. You accept this NIL package, you choose to leave before the end of the contract, you can't play for competing schools until the non compete is up.
5 for 5, contracts... 95% of all these issues get cleaned up.

I do not buy that for one second they will continue to push the boundries until there is basically no rules at all. We have already seen covid years, etc. At some point the NCAA may not even exist anymore but in the next ten years I expect basically no rules at all anymore.

Yep the NCAA is losing all the lawsuits and court cases so whey would the players stop at five years and say we are good? Many will never play in the NBA so why not play in college for nine years and collect big checks? The players will push this as far as they can and really maybe only the supreme court cans stop it. IF not you will see no eligibility requirements at some point.
The schools need to form a strong umbrella organization, where they can make it clear on compliance - for college students only, certain number of credit hours per term, one transfer, etc. Stuff like that.
They could call this new rules and compliance body something like the National University Athletic Association, or something.
Whip this thing into shape.
Having Sam back fits a perfect need for IU and should enable a pretty good chance this year.
I said last year the 2 I'd like to see back were Wilkerson and Alexis, and getting 1 of 2 is a great boost to a surprisingly talented group of newcomers.
I like Sam to be a top 6 player this coming year any way you slice it. All of a sudden IU has quick guards, strong inside bigs with depth, outside shooters, and playmaker. And with Alexis, you have a dependable scoring post presence inside who can guard big guys in conference. Having Sam and Sherrell is automatically better than last year by a wide margin once you add big Turk.
If they can become a good defensive team it could be a really good season. Im cautiously optimistic.
Main thing I see so far is guard quickness. That's a really nice thing to have for an offense in the B1G.
@mushroomgod thanks for the stats. Alexis was my favorite player last year. And I'm thrilled to have him back. I agree with you. Devries can't afford anymore bs and mediocre results. We're too loaded and deep. There's no justifiable excuse for not winning at this point. I don't think he'll be allowed to tank another entire year though. Instead, if he has us struggling he'll be replaced, this season, with another member of our coaching staff who knows how to win. Imho. Love our Hoosiers and this team should be able to hang with anyone. I'd love to see Devries become the coach IU deserve. But the jury's still out on that. Go IU!
