@arioznahoosier4554 I mean yeah, making the tourney is essential. But I think most are expecting more than that. I hope Dolson is. A top-third finish in the conference, a decent seed in the tourney, making the 2nd weekend at least are pretty much minimums for me.
Teams from this year that didn't make it to the 2nd weekend:
- 1 Florida
- 4 Kansas
- 2 Gonzaga
- 3 UVA
The whole '2nd weekend' line in the sand is always a weird one to me when it comes to the tournament.
Yeah upsets happen, and that's the nature of the tournament and probably the most forgivable goal we might miss. But the stated goals for the progam include "deep runs" in the tournament. I don't really know if there's an official definition of a "deep run" but I think a S16 would be the minimum.
That was Freddy Glass.
That, to Glass, is not good enough for Indiana basketball.
“The expectations for Indiana University basketball are to perennially contend for and win multiple Big Ten championships, regularly go deep in the NCAA tournament, and win our next national championship—and more after that,” Glass said. “We will identify and recruit a coach who will meet these expectations.”
@arioznahoosier4554 Contend for B10 titles. Top 4 seeds in the NCAA tournament. Have teams and a program that's often playing its best at the ends of seasons. I think those 3 things cover it for me. It wasn't absolutely necessary for CDD to do those things in year 1. And I wouldn't say he absolutely has to hit all those things in year 2. But it needs to be VERY, very clear he's heading in that direction. Right now, that's pretty far from clear. But his first 3 signings are encouraging...and if he can close Sherrell here soon, and add some more good pieces to fill out the roster, he'll have taken a decent step in the right direction, it would seem.
@all4you More like "Debbie I Have Expectations." DD has been at the P5 level for two seasons, and he's accomplished little (I know, injuries at WVU, not enough time to recruit, blah blah blah).
DD seems to be getting the puzzle pieces, but will they fit? Can he put it together? All fair questions. Offeason success doesn't guarantee season success, so we'll see.

We will not know until we see them on the court in November . We can sit around all summer and say look at all these highly ranked portal guys he got that means he is going to kill it next year. And some people will do that. I learned my lesson too many times on that one and have learned to wait until you actually see them play first. The hype on woodsons last portal class was pretty high and we know how that all turned out.

As somebody who has spent nearly 30 years across 4 decades perusing IU forums from the Indy Star/News to present day Huddle and every single one in between there have been two constants...Juvenile nicknames (Dumbles/Mumbles Davis, Samscum, Clappy, Lil Archie, Bigfoot, Doorknob) for our coaches and posters lamenting the perceived "lowered expectations" of other posters. It's a cycle that's repeated itself so many times and it doesn't just get old, it's been old for over a decade now.
Simply put we either get the horses to win or we don't. Either CDD wins enough with them to stick around or loses enough to be shown the door. Our expectations, high or low, have zero bearing on that.
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"

That is true though just getting the horses does not mean you are going to win as Woodson proved. That is the first step but then comes the weaving them together as a team and having them gel late in the year. I think with bags of money getting the horses is the easy part coaching them up in the hard part.
There is many a slip between the cup and the lip.
For those wondering about the backup point guard role...the man might be Del Jones. He has two years left (like nearly everyone else IU is pursuing ha) and played his freshman season at Clemson.
For those that do not know, I live near Clemson and actually have extensive thoughts on Del and what he can offer. I'll get those together as soon as possible but wanted to put the actual information on the board first. I saw a note on him on X from Tobias Bass (Tobias Bass on X: "Indiana has targeted Del Jones and he has a zoom call today with Tulsa He made the All-Big South Second Team with averages of 17.2PPG, 3.5APG and 3.5RPG this season (Radford) https://t.co/9pbdmgmIe E" / X) and then Jeff Rabjohns confirmed IU's interest on peegs.com.

I think its more important to consistently build teams that can/should hit the S16 or better. IE a Top 4 seed every year. You do that and its highly likely the rest will take care of itself. You'll get upset here/there like all coaches, but you have great odds of breaking through as well if you're consistently in a good position to do so. Thats something we haven't seen at IU in 30 years. Thats more important to me long-term than 1 fluke tournament run with a low seed. That would also be nice since we haven't done that either, but ppl are kidding themselves if they think that an occasional deep run while always being a low seed is going to satisfy many, especially the most outspoken of critics.
@surjay I would agree, competing for the conference title (always an RMK top goal) and getting a good tournament seed sets the stage for tournament success and also makes the program attractive for recruits who want to win. I don't think the money deals we are seeing are sustainable so we will be more dependent on being an attractive program with a good record of winning than being a wealthy one at some point.
@tjinman1987 Anxious to read your thoughts on him. Just from highlights and stats, and him having a little bit of size as a lead guard, he appears to be a great type of backup lead guard. Maybe could play alongside Burton too if needed, at times. The Sherrell thing is a both exciting, and unnerving at the same time... but the direction the rest of it is taking has been pretty good, so far. That could flip pretty quickly though if we miss out on Sherrell, and end up signing Rancik, and he sits as our only big for a while. He has enough Reed Bailey in him, that if that were to happen, this thread wouldn't be overly pleasant. And I can't guarantee I wouldn't be feeding the negativity.
Anyway... Jones seems like a great get, assuming his known role is backup rotation level guard.
@ams66 It's been, what, 1 day since he was on campus? If this was dragging on, I'd understand it, but if you don't give guys a reasonable amount of time to weigh offers and decisions, I don't think you're being realistic. I don't even know, but he's a very sought after prospect, what's he weighing 3-4 million dollar NIL deals? Think giving him a reasonable amount of time, is, well, reasonable. And I think "take it or leave it" sounds great, if you're not involved, but wouldn't be well-received in the actual marketplace, in such short timeframes.

I agree we have not seen that since probably 1994.

I am guessing its at least 4 and maybe 5 million. I am pretty sure lots of programs could have offered him 3 million but at 5 million the list gets much smaller. My guess is IU has offered 5 million.
We aren't the only ones.@ams66 play stupid games, win stupid prizes? Why? Do we have any other guys at his level and position, lined up and ready to commit? Cracks me up when posters say stuff like this. What if this was you, or your kid? Wouldn't you expect a school to give you reasonable time to weigh such important decisions, and what would you think of a school that didn't?
You may have been kidding, but I say give them time to make up their minds. If it was my kid, I'd be advising to consider multiple options and pick the one that is/feels best. And, I'd tell him to axe any program that tried to pressure him and not give him reasonable time.
Iowa forums were saying late last week that McCollum had made 'Accept this by Wednesday or it's off the table' type offers. Might have been to a couple of their guys leaving, not sure.
The portal circus happens fast! If I was a parent I'd understand a school telling my kid to fish or cut bait. The school has responsibilities too, outside of we want to be really easygoing and nice people.
"We're Indiana. We're good enough. We're smart enough. And doggone it, people like us." Won't fly. (With apologies to Stuart Smalley.)
