Not sure if age is the trigger for Cig. If he stacks a couple of championships (Conference/CFP appearances/Naty's over the next 4-5 he could be done.) If he hits a drought, who knows. He wants to be great. I love it. We are so fortunate to have him as our coach. Go Hoosiers!
He strikes me as a guy that will coach until he feels he can't do it how he always has, and how he wants to, any more. So I'd say its pretty hard to predict, father time will make that determination. I could see him coaching well in to his 70s, if he stays healthy and energetic enough to maintain his own standards.
I suspect he'll make sure when the time comes his successor is already in place. Think Haines if he were to retire after next year. I also have to believe that successor isn't currently on the staff. No way Haines (or Shanahan) is sticking around 6-8-10 years.
And why wouldn't they stick around for 6-8 years?
Doesn't one make over 3mil and the other over 2mil?
That is pretty good jack and if they didn't get a P4 head coaching job, they would have to take a pay cut.
He can retire after Indiana’s fifth Natty.

It's great money, yes. But at some point these guys want a shot at running their own show. Cig himself made that leap of faith. I love that they're sticking around... so far, and hope that doesn't change.
Rumor has it that Mike Shanahan is getting married this summer and just bought the house around the corner from me here in southeast Bloomington. Hopefully that indicates that he is thinking about staying around here for a while. He strikes me as a guy that will coach until he feels he can't do it how he always has, and how he wants to, any more. That's good news. The issue for Shanahan though might be that no one knows how much of the offense is really on him given that Cigs is an offensive guy. Not like Haines, who Cigs has commented multiple times that he leaves the defense mostly to him.
I'm sure both would get their chances (especially if we keep winning) if we they really do want to be a head coach. Glad they are happy at IU at the moment.
Shanahan and Haines are very loyal to Cignetti. He gave them their first coaching jobs and they have been with him almost their entire careers. Cignetti doesn’t make his assistants work insane hours and lets them go home at night to be with their families. Combine that with winning at a high level and making a lot of money and they are in a good situation.
I heard him somewhere say he could see himself going until 75. But wHo knows. I’d probably guess around 72, depending on how many records he wants to break.
Yeah he said something along those lines, the context of it was from a interview I think where he was saying he had been texting with philip rivers after Rivers made his NFL comeback, so he didnt see why he couldnt keep coaching for a long time

I have read on this forum that Haines has said he wants to be a head coach but I have not read a news story where he stated that.
But even if he does want to be a head coach, why not make 20 mil over the next 6 years and take over here?
