It has been 151 days we have lived without Hoosier football, and there are only 94 more to go. In his 5th year as head coach of IU football, Tom Allen and the Hoosiers will head to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes on September 4th. Today’s a double feature day, and first up is James Evans.

The Indiana Hoosiers have some big shoes to fill on special teams as IU has to find a replacement for All-Big Ten punter Haydon Whitehead who is preparing for the NFL Draft. After having great success with Whitehead and ProKick Australia, Allen and his staff reached back down under for punter James Evans.

The Hoosier Huddle Spring Practice Preview series continues as we take a look at Indiana’s special teams unit. It’s a unit that had some very strong parts as well as areas for improvement in 2020 and will have to replace punter Haydon Whitehead. The Hoosiers finished the year 25th in net field position rankings and fifth in field goal efficiency according to Footballoutsiders.com. However, the Hoosiers ranked 86th in kickoff return efficiency. The Hoosiers do have the majority of their special teamers back in 2021, so let’s take a look at the group heading into spring practice.

With spring practice right around the corner, Hoosier Huddle is ramping up coverage. Today’s focus is on position battles that will begin to be decided during the spring practice period. While it is possible the outcomes of these battles won’t be determined until the fall, spring practice should give the coaches an idea of who can step up and fill the holes left by some important departing players.

Tom Allen and special teams coach Kasey Teegardin went back to the other side of the globe to find their next punter in Auckland, New Zealand native James Evans. Evans trained with Prokick Australia, a company that helps “guide and transition Australian athletes to perform at the College/ NFL level, and with our natural Aussie instinct of kicking a ball, we have focused on that area.” They have produced 17 All-Americans and five Ray Guy Award winners since 2007.
