Indiana Football: A Closer Look at the ’27 Recruiting Class

A busy month of commitments has transpired for Indiana Football. With the dead period beginning, college football programs are stepping back and waiting for last-minute decisions. The 16 commitments on the 2027 Hoosier roster are listed at No. 43 on 247Sports’ team ranking list, with an average of 87.63. Rivals has Indiana slightly closer to the top, at No. 29, with an average of 87.868. 15 of Indiana’s 16 commitments are listed as 3-star prospects by 247Sports; wide receiver Branden Sharpe remains the lone four-star prospect.

But don’t let that fool you; Coach Cignetti has a National Championship title on his resume, and through it all, he has never designed a roster determined by 5-star prospects. He relies on coachability, player development, and character. His focus on three-star prospects is orchestrated and deliberate, making each of these 16 commits a noteworthy decision by the Hoosiers. 

Improving the secondary seemed to be on Indiana’s checklist, as they have signed four players, including Chris Bradley, Ramir Harris-Dupree, Rico Jackson, and Brady Scott. Each player has displayed an elite nose for the ball, quickness, and relentless effort in chasing down opponents. A lot of depth was added to the front seven as well, as five players will play in the box, including Reinaldo Perez and Myles Smith at edge and Jalaythan Mayfield, Garyon Hobbs, and Cain Brackney at the linebacker position. 

Versatility as an athlete seemed to be a quality Indiana was looking for. Almost every player on the 2027 roster is a two- or three-sport athlete, participating and excelling in multiple sports across their high school careers. Clearly, their versatility and overall athleticism have allowed them to be difference-makers on the field, which is an aspect that was not overlooked by the coaching staff. Playing multiple sports also guarantees that a player is coachable and willing to learn. As stated earlier, Coach Cignett thrives in player development; he sees an athlete’s potential before they even step out onto Memorial Field and ensures they reach new heights as a player. 

On the offensive side of the ball, the Hoosiers have added explosive wide receivers, including Branden Sharpe and Jordan Carrasquillo. Da’Jon Talley-Rhodes is the lone running back in this class so far, but his speed and acceleration will allow him to get points on the ground. Quarterback protection comes in the form of Caleb Pugh, Jeremiah Jones, and Mason McDermott. All three players display tremendous athleticism, strength, and footwork. Dual-threat quarterback Jameson Purcell rounds out the class so far and will add versatility to the Hoosier backfield.

Indiana is still waiting for five-star prospect wide receiver Monshun Sales to announce his decision; however, while everyone waits, it is important to note the talent already embedded into this 2027 roster. Each player brings individual talent, athleticism, versatility, and a relentless effort to the Indiana Hoosiers.

Watch List

Monshun Sales, Wide Receiver, Lawrence North, Indianapolis, IN

Indiana fans are on the edge of their seats as five-star prospect Monshun Sales has yet to announce his commitment. Sales is the No. 1 wide receiver in Indiana and ranked 2nd nationally at his position. With 39 offers, Indiana hopes to make the top of his list.  Sales is one of the last uncommitted five-star prospects in his class. In his junior season, Sales reeled in 37 catches for 794 yards and 9 touchdowns. He added reps on defense, tallying 56 tackles. Sales was also a state qualifier for track and field in his sophomore year.

Matt Weaver of Peegs.com spoke to Hoosier Huddle about Indiana’s chances, saying, “Indiana has been the one school that has been there all the way through. I like Indiana’s chances, and I think they have a great shot.” Weaver also mentioned that Sales would make an immediate impact on the field as a freshman. Sales will announce his commitment sometime in early July, and with competition from Texas, Alabama, and Ohio State, the Hoosiers are hoping to keep him in his home state.

Roman Igwebuike, Linebacker, Mount Carmel, Chicago, IL

There is no shortage of interest tied to linebacker Roman Igwebuike. With 45 offers, it is clear that every school wants to see Igwebuike on their field. With offers from schools like Ohio State, Tennessee, and Notre Dame, Indiana is hoping it can outlast and make the strongest mark on the young player. The 4-star prospect, according to 247Sports, is the 12th-ranked linebacker in his class and the 8th-ranked player in Illinois. In his junior season, Igwebuike accumulated 115 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and two interceptions.

At 6-foot-3 inches, Igwebuike is impossible to ignore while on the field. He can gain the edge quickly and blitz the quarterback. His vision is impeccable as he closes in on the gaps and extinguishes the ball carriers. Igwebuike is also disruptive over the middle, and his large frame forces quarterbacks to account for his presence before the ball is thrown.

He also displays strong effort and isn’t afraid to chase down a ball carrier. Overall, Igwebuike is a playmaker and a disruptor and would be a perfect match for this Hoosiers defense. However, indications are that he’ll end up at Notre Dame.

’27 Commitments

Jalaythan Mayfield, Linebacker, Lincolnton High School, Lincolnton, NC

On June 19, Mayfield found his way off our watch list and onto the 2027 commitment roster. Mayfield chose Indiana over Georgia and Miami (FL). The North Carolina native has been deemed a four-star prospect by 247Sports, and he sits as the 16th-ranked player in North Carolina and 216th nationally. Mayfield is a multi-sport athlete, competing in both football and track and field. He finished his 2025 junior season with 152 tackles, which was a 43-tackle increase from just the year prior. He tallied 26 tackles for loss, 6 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, 1 kick block, and 1 punt block.

He even found reps as a ball carrier, running the ball 63 times for 343 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 6-foot-1 athlete lives in the backfield, attacking the opposing ball carriers, as well as getting to the quarterback. His large frame makes him a hurdle for quarterbacks’ arms. He plays on instinct, knowing the play before it unfolds, and he follows through on tackles. Overall, Mayfield is a strong, physical linebacker who will be a positive addition to this Indiana defense.

Ramir Harris-Dupree, Cornerback, Grimsley High School, Greensboro, NC

Ramir Harris-Dupree made his commitment to the Hoosiers on June 20, just a few weeks after his official visit to Bloomington. Harris-Dupree is a three-star prospect according to 247Sports and the No. 33 cornerback in North Carolina, and ranked 86th nationally at his position. Harris-Dupree chose Indiana over 21 other offers, including Missouri and Rutgers.

The 6-foot cornerback completed his junior season with 54 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble. At 160 pounds, Harris-Dupree displays quick closing speed, shutting down plays before they develop. He shows hip fluidity and the ability to change directions and adjust when needed. He also has an eye for the ball and limits yards after the catch. Harris-Dupree’s physicality and playmaking ability helped lead Grimsley High School to the 2025 NCHSAA 7A State Championship title.

Cain Brackney, Linebacker, Bixby High School, Bixby, OK

The Hoosiers were too good to pass up for Brackney, who flipped his commitment from UCLA to Indiana on June 22. Indiana’s hot pursuit paid off, as Brackney officially became a Hoosier. In his junior season, the three-star prospect out of Bixby, Oklahoma, tallied 102 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception for a touchdown, one pass breakup, and one forced fumble.

Brackney is quick on his feet, mobile, and can adjust to where the ball will be. At 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, Brackney is disruptive and physical; he finishes tackles. Brackney has a sense for the game and anticipates offensive schemes. Brackney would be an exciting addition to this Hoosiers team if all goes well this weekend.

Caleb Pugh, Interior Offensive Line, Grand Rapids Christian, Grand Rapids, MI

Caleb Pugh placed his faith in Indiana on June 21, officially committing to the Hoosiers. According to 247Sports, Pugh is a three-star prospect and the 19th-rated player in Michigan. He is ranked 83rd nationally at his position. The 6-foot-3, 295-pound lineman is nothing short of impressive, and his skill dates back to his versatility and experience as an overall athlete.

Throughout high school, Pugh has competed in wrestling, lacrosse, and track and field. He is a two-time All-State wrestler in the heavyweight division. Pugh plays physical, gets under defenders, gains leverage, and consistently wins 1-on-1 matchups. His experience as a four-sport athlete translates directly to his strong footwork, ensuring he rarely gets beaten by quicker interior defenders. He is a solid run blocker, creates lanes for his ball carriers, and he frequently flattens defenders with pancake blocks. Pugh chose Indiana over 15 other offers, including Yale, Navy, and Army.

Chris Bradley, Cornerback, North College Hill, West Chester, OH

Chris Bradley arrived in Bloomington last weekend and made his commitment to Indiana shortly after on June 14. With additional interest from Miami (OH), Indiana came in first place. Bradley is a 3-star prospect according to 247Sports and is ranked as the 122nd cornerback in his class nationally. Bradley’s junior season at North College Hill was impressive, as he tallied 6 interceptions, 14 pass breakups, and 28 total tackles.

Bradley has recorded a 10.71-second 100-meter dash, and his speed consistently plays to his advantage. With his elite speed, Bradley can close in on the ball quickly and recover efficiently when he gets caught out of position. Bradley attacks the ball at its highest point and remains patient, often baiting the quarterback to throw his way.

Bradley has also proven to be a strong contributor to special teams, as he logged 2 kick returns for a touchdown in his junior season.

Mason McDermott, Offensive Line, Noblesville HS, Noblesville, IN

The 6-foot-7 offensive tackle made his commitment to become a Hoosier on May 17, 2026, just two days after his official visit to Bloomington. McDermott is rated a four-star prospect by 247 Sports, coming in 5th in Indiana and 305th nationally. The 285-pound tackle consistently uses his large frame and athleticism to displace heavier opponents, and uses his footwork and agility to his advantage. McDermott chose Indiana over an impressive 18 offers, including Northwestern, Missouri, and UCLA. The Indiana native will be packing up his bags and moving just a handful of miles down the road to the place he always knew he would call home.

Jameson Purcell, Quarterback, Maine South, Park Ridge, IL

Purcell committed to Indiana on July 21, 2025. He chose IU over offers from California State, Auburn, Florida, and Arkansas. Purcell claimed the starting quarterback position in Week 4 of his sophomore season at Maine South, finishing the season 7-1 as a starter. In his 2025 campaign, the three-star prospect brought Maine South to a 10-2 record and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the Illinois 8A playoffs. The dual-threat quarterback completed 226 of 362 passes for 2,871 yards and found momentum downfield, carrying the ball 51 times for 253 yards and 28 passing touchdowns.

Purcell has proven to be calm under pressure and confident in the pocket, allowing him to successfully clear traffic, throw on the run, and extend the play. The lefty finds his receivers in tight windows and continuously uses his downfield vision to hit his targets. 

Garyon Hobbs, Linebacker, Christian Academy of Louisville, Louisville, KY

The defender out of Louisville, Kentucky, committed to IU on Jan.10, 2026, just 24 hours after the Hoosiers’ 56-22 Peach Bowl victory over the Oregon Ducks. Hobbs is listed as an athlete but is a “do-it-all” defender who can slot in as a backer or a safety depending on personnel. He also displayed offensive prowess, with over 500 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, along with five interceptions, over 16 games in his 2025 season at Atherton High School. The three-star prospect, according to 247 Sports, chose Indiana over offers from schools like Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky.  Hobbs is listed at 5-foot-11, 198 pounds, and his versatility as a defender will make him a difference-maker for this Hoosiers’ defense in the 2027 season.

Jeremiah Jones, Offensive Lineman, Michigan City High School, Michigan City, IN

Jones is a three-star prospect according to 247 Sports and made his commitment to IU on Jan. 31, 2026. Jones is a top-20 player in the state of Indiana and signed with the Hoosiers on his Junior Day visit. The 6-foot-6, 275-pound tackle uses his size to his advantage, overpowering his opponents and forcing them to their back feet. Jones is a relentless player, continually creating lanes for his running backs and ensuring his quarterback has time. Jones received four offers and chose IU over Miami (OH), Toledo, and Western Michigan.

Branden Sharpe, Wide Receiver, Brownsburg High School, Brownsburg, IN

Athleticism arrives in the form of wide receiver Branden Sharpe, who made his commitment to IU on May 18, 2026. The three-sport athlete finds excellence on the track, the basketball court, and the football field at Brownsburg High School. As a track and field athlete, Sharpe’s fastest time in the 100-meter dash equals 11.17, and a solid 18-4 in the long jump. In his junior season on the basketball court, Sharpe averaged 8.4 points per game, controlled the glass with 3.3 rebounds per game, and was a formidable defender, accumulating 2.6 steals per game.

As fall rolled around each season, so too did football, and Sharpe excelled on the gridiron, finishing his sophomore season with 66 passes for 1,165 receiving yards, averaging 17.7 yards per catch, and seven touchdowns.

The following year, in 2025, Sharpe made his presence impossible to ignore, accumulating 59 receptions for 1,143 yards, averaging 19.4 yards per catch, and 13 touchdowns. The 5-foot-9 junior also brought Brownsburg High School football two consecutive Indiana State Championships.

For Sharpe, every season arrives with a different uniform and a new teammate, but his versatility as an athlete has paid dividends to his football capabilities. Sharpe consistently wins at the line of scrimmage and uses his speed and quickness to separate from defenders.

His sheer athleticism will continue to be a difference-maker. He has also proven to be a strong returner, finishing his sophomore and junior seasons with 2 kickoff returns for a touchdown. Sharpe chose Indiana over Cincinnati, Purdue, and Vanderbilt.

Rico Jackson, Safety, Quince Orchard High School, Gaithersburg, MD

Jackson committed to Indiana on May 16, 2026, and received a total of 23 offers. He landed in Bloomington over schools like Virginia Tech and Penn State. Jackson is an instinctual athlete whose speed translates to all three phases of the game. He is projected to be a corner in college, but could easily help the Hoosiers as a special teamer on day 1. He has a nose for the football and is extremely disruptive to opposing offenses.

247 Sports has labeled Jackson as a three-star prospect and is the No. 25 overall prospect in Maryland. Jackson might not be the largest defensive back on the field, as he stands at 5 feet 11 inches and weighs 165 pounds; however, he makes up for it with his physicality and relentless effort.

Jordan Carrasquillo, Wide Receiver, Milton High School, Alpharetta, GA

Carrasquillo rounds out the seven commits so far for the class of 2027. He made his choice on May 21, 2026. Carrasquillo is a top-104 wide receiver nationally. A few years ago, at Milton High School, Carrasquillo could be found with a lacrosse stick in his hands and a pretty certain fate at Ohio State, where he was committed to becoming a Buckeye. However, football had other plans, as the 6-foot-1 receiver had a breakout season his junior year with 33 catches for 586 yards, averaging 17.8 yards per catch, and seven touchdowns.

Carrasquillo’s athletic ability extends beyond the two fields and bleeds into track, where he has a respectable sprinting career. On the football field, Carrasquillo is a matchup nightmare and uses his large frame and strength to blow past defenders and win contested balls. The three-star prospect chose Indiana over offers from Maryland, Cincinnati, and Kentucky. 

Myles Smith, Edge, Farmington High School, Farmington, MI

All eyes turned to Indiana as the Hoosiers landed a standout edge rusher out of Farmington, Michigan, on May 28. Myles Smith has garnered a composite rating as a 4-star prospect, and according to 247 Sports, Smith is the No. 8 player in the state of Michigan and is ranked 32nd among edge rushers in his class. Smith went on his official visit to Indiana on May 15 and made his decision shortly after. Smith stands 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 215 pounds.

Smith has a phenomenal pass rush move set, plays fast down the line, and can recognize the run and adjust. He is a standout player on the basketball court, and that athleticism translates to the football field, where he uses his vertical to cut off passing lanes and defend receivers near the line of scrimmage. Smith chose Indiana over Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri, and Oklahoma.

Brady Scott, Safety, Tabor Academy, Reading, MA

Brady Scott is officially set to suit up as a Hoosier and take the field at Memorial Stadium in the fall of 2027. Scott is rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports and is No. 563 nationally and the fifth-best player in Massachusetts. Scott is listed as an athlete, but is projected to play at the safety position for the Hoosiers.

At 6 feet and 195 pounds, Scott plays physical and isn’t afraid to elevate and attack the ball in the air. He displays hip fluidity and can change directions quickly. His versatility allows him to control the run game, step back in coverage, and defend the pass. His vision is strong as he can anticipate plays, adjust, and defend.

He has proven to be a difference-maker on special teams as well, which adds another layer to the young safety. Scott’s versatility as a defensive back allows him to be comfortable at the line of scrimmage and in coverage, which is a good sign that he will fit in with the heavier contact of college play. Scott made his decision to become a Hoosier on May 31, choosing Indiana over 18 other offers, including Iowa, Duke, and Georgia Tech.

Da’Jon Talley-Rhodes, Running Back, St. John’s College, Washington, DC

Standout running back Da’Jon Talley-Rhodes went on his official visit to Bloomington on May 29, and Indiana made its mark as he committed to become a Hoosier on June 3. The Washington, D.C. native is the No.1 player in DC according to 247Sports and is labeled as a three-star prospect. In his junior season at St. John’s College High School, he rushed for 1600 yards and accumulated 15 rushing touchdowns.

Talley-Rhodes displays good acceleration, and he bounces off defenders. His vision is instinctual, and when he sees an opening, he doesn’t hesitate to use his stellar acceleration ability to get to the second level. At 6-foot, 213 pounds, Talley-Rhodes can bounce off defenders and stay on his feet. He chose Indiana over 21 other offers, including Penn State and Boston College.

Reinaldo Perez, Defensive Lineman, Columbus Academy, Columbus, OH

The Hoosiers made a huge splash on June 3, and their smiles may have gotten a little brighter, as four-star prospect Reinaldo Perez committed to Indiana. The Columbus, Ohio, native is ranked as the No. 16 player in the state and ranked No. 36 nationally among defensive linemen.

Perez consistently wins his one-on-one battles, leaving opponents struggling to block him. He comes off the ball low and aggressively, demonstrating excellent pad level. With a stature of 6-foot-6, Perez lives in the backfield and is a quarterback nightmare, playing to their blind spots and snuffing the play. Perez’s effort and aggressiveness, paired with his sheer talent, make him an undeniable athlete and an additional highlight to the Hoosiers’ 2027 recruiting class. Perez chose Indiana over 33 other offers, including Ohio State and Tennessee.
