2019 Indiana Football Position Preview: Defensive Line

2019 Indiana Football Position Preview: Defensive Line

Written by Evan McShane (@veryreasonable)

The Hoosiers return plenty of experience on the defensive line, but beyond the frontline there will be some questions about IU’s depth that need answered. Seniors Allen Stallings and Gavin Everett are set to anchor the defensive end spots. Stallings tied for the team lead in quarterback hurries last season while collecting two sacks, six tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. Everett started 11 games last year and was the IU defensive player of the week against Michigan. Together, Stallings and Everett hope to make the most of their senior season.

Spring Practice Starts in Twelve Days, Here is What You Need to Know About IUFB as They Transition into 2019

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

The Indiana Hoosiers will open their 2019 spring practice session on March 2nd and wrap up with their annual Cream and Crimson game on Friday April 12th. IU is coming off of frustrating back-to-back 5-7 seasons. Tom Allen is entering his third spring as Indiana’s head coach after taking over the helm prior to the Foster Farms Bowl in 2016. His record sits at 10-15 and 4-14 in conference.

The Hoosiers enter spring practice with some recruiting momentum as Allen and his staff inked one of the best classes, if not the best, in school history. However, the Hoosiers also come with plenty of uncertainty.

Over the next couple of weeks HoosierHuddle.com will preview positions, players who may fly under the radar and much more from spring practice, but for right now here are the items surrounding spring ball to watch.

2018 Early Signing Period Signee Profile: DT Juan Harris

2018 Early Signing Period Signee Profile: DT Juan Harris

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@Hoosier_Huddle)

Juan Harris, 6’3”, 360 pounds, Janesville, WI (Independence C.C.), DT, 247Sports Composite Ranking H.S.: 3-star (85.00)

If the name Juan Harris sounds familiar, you’re right. Harris committed to and played the 2017 season with the Hoosiers before moving on to Independence Community College. During his freshman season in Bloomington, Harris played in three games. The Hoosiers need help in the middle of the defensive line and if Harris can get over some hurdles and sticks in Bloomington, he can be the plug the defense needs to take the next step. Harris has the athleticism, even at 360 pounds, to be a really solid nose tackle.

Spring Practice 2018 Position Preview: Defensive Line

Written By: TJ Inman (@TJHoosierHuddle)

Our next position preview as look ahead to the 2018 season focuses on the defensive line. Position coach and co-defensive coordinator Mark Hagen is a wizard and a real asset to the program and it’s hard to imagine the Hoosiers having anything other than a solid line with Hagen in charge. This personnel group has the chance to be more than just solid but there are certainly some question marks as IU must replace steady Nate Hoff and a pair vastly improved players in Greg Gooch and Robert McCray. We’ll split this into four different sections: tackle starters, tackle contributors/rising talent, defensive end starters, defensive end contributors.

Success Along the Defensive Line Will Again Be a Group Effort in 2017

Success Along the Defensive Line Will Again Be a Group Effort in 2017

By David Sugarman (@David_Sugarman2)

As Indiana has geared up for its first full season under Tom Allen, there have been a number of coaching changes, but the core of the defensive staff has stayed intact. Back for his second year as the defensive line coach, Mark Hagen will look to continue the progress his group made in 2016.

Last season Indiana gave up 35 less yards per game on the ground than they did in 2015. The team’s crowning achievement may have been when they held likely the Big Ten’s and nation’s best running back in Penn State’s Saquon Barkley to 58 yards on 33 carries, less than two yards per touch.

Now headed into year two with Hagen, Indiana will look to replace Ralph Green III due to graduation and Nile Sykes, undisclosed season ending injury. Those two combined for nearly 50 tackles and six sacks in 2016. If Indiana wants to take another step in the right direction and achieve their goal of becoming a top 25 defense, it starts with the big boys in the trenches.

IU's Defense Should Be Solid, But Details Need To Be Ironed Out In Fall Camp

IU's Defense Should Be Solid, But Details Need To Be Ironed Out In Fall Camp

Written By Alex Compton

The Spring Game came and went. Then it went some more then it ended. A 42-36 win for Team Crimson over Team Cream in overtime, it was full of ups and downs for both teams, but as is the case with both the philosophy remains that it is a glorified scrimmage that you can’t get too high or low about. Stats weren’t even kept and we didn’t go to the effort to keep track too much because that’s not what this game was about. It was about seeing where a team stood still over three months away from opening night kickoff when they take on Ohio State. With multiple key defensive players sitting out, it was hardly a true barometer of what IU will be in the fall, but there were some things worth taking note of. Just remember, Ohio State is still three months away. Indiana didn’t do anything tonight to take a lead or put themselves in a hole against the Buckeyes. With that said, let’s take a look at how the defense fared.
