Spring Football 2025 – Tight End Preview, Depth Chart and Superlatives

2024 was a milestone and memorable season for the Indiana Hoosiers. Curt Cignetti’s first season in Bloomington resulted in a stunning 11-1 regular season record with the lone loss coming in Columbus against eventual National Champion Ohio State. Indiana made the College Football Playoff and battled Notre Dame before falling in South Bend and ending the season at 11-2. It was a school-record for wins and Curt Cignetti was honored as the National Coach of the Year. As IU begins preparations for the 2025 campaign, there is an unprecedented amount of attention on the program. Hoosier Huddle is gearing up for the spring with individual position group previews. Today, we examine the tight end room. IU lost Zach Horton, but there are plenty of reasons for optimism after the Hoosier tight ends had 4 touchdowns and 228 receiving yards in 2024.

From Ian Thomas to Peyton Hendershot to AJ Barner (grandfathered in), the Indiana Hoosiers have attracted and sent several tight ends to the NFL after their time in Bloomington. This year looks to be the start of the same, as the Hoosiers boast experience in the tight end room along with high level talent from recent recruits. I would not be surprised if we see a couple members of this tight end room in the NFL in the next 2-4 years. Let’s look into the room together:

Indiana football’s spring practice opens up on Thursday, March 21st. Today we turn our attention to the tight end position, which has been lacking at IU since Peyton Hendershot left for the NFL. With the coaching change, IU will likely deploy just one tight end most of the time. Here is a look at the position heading into spring practice. (Editor’s Note: Players listed in year order)

The Hoosiers will be needing to get production out of a mix of young and veteran tight ends this year. The group enters fall camp with 10 players on the roster including three transfers. Last season, the position struggled and battled through injuries. AJ Barner failed to live up to expectations and transferred to Michigan in the off-season.

2022 Spring IUFB Position Battles: Tight End

2022 Spring IUFB Position Battles: Tight End

Written by Zach Greene

After the departure of All-Big Ten Tight End Peyton Hendershot someone on the offensive side of the ball will need to step up at the tight end position. Last year, most of the production at the position came from Hendershot who finished the season with over 500 yards receiving and four touchdowns. The offense often would line up in two or three tight end sets with A.J. Barner and Matt Bjorson. However, Bjorson is no longer with the program. This season the Hoosiers have a new offensive coordinator in Walt Bell who looks to ramp up an offense that was historically bad last season. That said, the tight end position is led by a clear front runner in A.J. Barner, who I expect to get starting reps at camp, and a bunch of guys who will battle to get reps. The Hoosiers recruited two local Ohio guys who come into the program as sought-after freshmen. Now let’s dive into the tight end position.
