The Indiana Hoosiers will have to replace another coordinator prior to the 2022 season as defensive coordinator Charlton Warren was announced as the co-defensive coordinator at the University of North Carolina on Saturday, just a day after defensive line coach Kevin Peoples left for a position at Missouri. The Hoosiers defense finished 10th in the Big Ten in total defense, 11th in pass defense, 8th in run defense and 14th in scoring defense in 2021 when they went 2-10. Warren was UNC’s defensive backs coach in 2015 and 2016.

Hoosiers Defense Needs to Continue to Battle and Execute Against Slippery Terrapins

The Hoosiers had a tough loss to Ohio State over the weekend, giving up 54 points to an elite offense. However, if the Hoosiers want to bounce back and make a bowl game, they need to execute better.

“Our goal is to keep the offense from scoring, so for us, I don’t think it is about any added pressure, it's more about execution that is critical,” defensive coordinator Charlton Warren said during his Monday press conference. “We don’t have a margin to bust, you don’t have a margin for metal lapses.”

After another frustrating loss, Indiana fell to 2-4 on the season, coming against the #10 team in the nation and now #9 in the nation Michigan State Spartans. Still, defensive coordinator Charlton Warren was pleased with how his unit stepped up despite dealing with critical injuries in the secondary. One of those players to step up was cornerback Noah Pierre.

Indiana will begin their Big Ten conference play this weekend as the Hoosiers travel to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions. The Hoosiers are coming off of a game against Western Kentucky where they gave up 458 yards of offense.

One of the things that defensive coordinator Charlton Warren said the defense can do better is set the edge and play tighter on the wide receivers. This way the Hoosiers can have a better chance to not give up big plays or big chunk yardage plays to the opposing offense.

The Hoosiers 38-24 loss to Cincinnati was disappointing for the coaches, players, and fans after starting the game taking a 14-0 lead. There was much improvement from this up-and-coming program compared to their first two games. If a couple of big plays and penalties could have gone in Hoosier’s favor, they could have come out with a win. This week the Hoosiers will travel about three hours south to take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at 8 pm EST on CBS. The Hoosiers are 10-point favors and will look to gain some momentum going into a nationally televised game against Penn State. That said, let’s dive into some keys for this Hoosiers team getting a win on Saturday!

Charlton Warren Says He Knows the “Character” of the Defense

Charlton Warren has big shoes to fill following the performance of the defense last season under Kane Wommack who is now the head coach at the University of South Alabama. However, Warren is very excited to see what the defense will show him in the opener at Iowa on Saturday.

“I think we know the personality of our team, we know the character of our team and we know what makes them tick,” Warren said during his press conference on Monday. “As any coach we are anxious to see them go out there against live bullets, where everything counts. Also how they react to adversity.”

Reese Taylor Helping Younger DBs Understand the Standards of the IU Secondary

Written by Sammy Jacobs (@HoosierHuddle

“A football player has to be a football player, you have to learn to adjust in any type of way.” Indiana defensive back Reese Taylor said this morning in response to my question about adjusting to Charlton Warren’s defense. Warren takes over for Kane Wommack who left IU to become the head coach at South Alabama. While the nuances of the defense may change a little, the standard that Taylor is setting for the younger defensive backs hasn’t.
