It’s award season for the Big Ten football as the regular season and Indiana’s freshman running back Jaylin Lucas is taking home some hardware. Lucas is the first freshman and first Hoosier to earn the Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year Award in its history.

Much of the offseason discussion around Indiana’s defense has centered around how the Hoosiers can replace linebacker Micah McFadden. The question is fair, certainly, but with experienced guys returning and Indiana’s heavy investment at the position in the transfer portal this offseason, the position group still projects as one of the stronger rooms on the defense.

Contributing as a freshman in the Big Ten is not an easy feat. Even players that come in as ballyhooed five-star prospects face a steep adjustment period. The physical tools of five-star prospects are rare though and those tools make that transition just a little bit easier. Dasan McCullough, a former five-star prospect that played at Bloomington South High School a season ago and stayed committed to IU even after his father’s (Deland McCullough) departure to Notre Dame, plans on doing more than just getting adjusted to college in 2022. He plans on being a part of a winning defense.

Welcome to the 2022 edition of the Hoosier Huddle Countdown! We are now officially underway as we countdown from 100 to the beginning of the 2022 Indiana University football season. Each day, we will take a look at one (or two) players on the current roster and highlight the players role in the upcoming season. Today, we take a look at Dasan McCullough and Emery Simmons. Both of these players wear “0” but the site will be quite busy on the opening day of the season covering a massive contest against Illinois. Thus, Simmons and McCullough begin the countdown!

The Indiana Hoosiers will have to replace the heart and soul of their linebacker room and defense as Micah McFadden is off to chase his NFL dreams. The Hoosiers will also be under the new direction of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Chad Wilt. While Wilt has not exclusively coached linebackers, he has been a coach for over 20 years and will have Tom Allen calling the plays on defense.

The biggest news in the world of IU football this week was the report that running backs coach Deland McCullough will be heading to Notre Dame to take on the same role with the Irish. Hoosiers fans went into full on meltdown mode over this news, not just because another coach was leaving IU, but what it could mean for the Hoosiers two most coveted recruits over the next two classes in Dasan and Daeh McCullough and current Hoosier defensive back Deland McCullough II.

Growing up in Bloomington, Deland McCullough II was bled into the Hoosiers football program as his dad Deland McCullough helped coach the running backs from 2011-2016. During these years, McCullough II fell in love with Indiana and knew that he wanted to come back to play for this program when he got older.

Dasan McCullough, son of IU associate head coach Deland McCullough, has officially announced today that he is decommitting from Ohio State and is staying in Bloomington to play under head coach Tom Allen. It was announced in a tweet that referenced the Hoosiers landing all three McCulloughs saying “Just Went Triple Platinum”.

When the Hoosiers hired Deland McCullough this spring, they received more than they were asking for. Not only did McCullough bring his NFL experience back to Bloomington, but he also brought his two sons, Deland McCullough II and Deah McCullough, with him. The only missing piece to the family puzzle is the class of 2022 Ohio State commit Dasan McCullough.
