With Signing Day just about 36 hours away the Indiana Hoosiers got a shot in their arm for the secondary as cornerback Raheem Layne committed to IU on Monday evening. Layne de-committed from Minnesota on January 23rd after taking an official visit to Indiana on Jan. 13th.

Layne is from Sebastian River H.S. in Sebastian, FL. He stands at 6-foot and weighs 185 pounds, which is good size for a corner in the Big Ten. He is rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports Composite rankings and 157th best corner in the class. He has the ability to come down hill and make hits on ball carriers as well as being a solid cover corner. In his highlight film he shows he can lay big hits on receivers across the middle and break up passes. He has great speed to go along with a very long stride, so don't be surprised to see Layne be a factor in the return game at some point in his IU career. He finished the 2016 season as an all-area first team selection after posting 57 tackles, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

During his commitment announcement on TCPalm.com he praised Indiana coach Brandon Shelby and called Indiana the best coaching staff he experienced. He said he picked Indiana because "as soon as I stepped on the campus I felt like I was at home. Me and Coach Shelby have a real great relationship." Layne added that he felt that Indiana was the best coaching staff he has been around. The corner also had a message for Hoosier fans, "Tune in, August 31st, catch me in action, and watch us beat Ohio State."

Layne would be the 22nd commit in the 2017 class for the Hoosiers, which now ranks 59th nationally. He holds offers from nine schools including Iowa, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, East Carolina, and Florida International. Layne picked Indiana over Wake Forest.
