Tom Allen and his staff has won a huge recruiting battle on Thursday as four-star quarterback Donaven McCulley has decided to commit to the Hoosiers. Allen and offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan had made the Lawrence North (Ind.) signal caller a top priority and had originally offered McCulley all the way back in June of 2018.

McCulley is rated a four-star recruit and the 317th best player nationally as well as the 12th best dual-threat quarterback in the nation and the third best prospect in Indiana by 247 Sports. McCulley had 12 total offers, but narrowed his list to Indiana, Iowa, Purdue, Ole Miss and Missouri back in April.

247 Sports’ recruiting expert Allen Trieu gave this scouting report on McCulley: “Tall, bigger-framed prospect. Very good athlete who can run and make plays with his feet. Throws well on the move and shows the ability to throw from every angle and does not have to be set to generate velocity. Above-average arm strength and can throw with touch. Has to keep working on getting set and getting rid of the ball quickly consistently. Although he was forced to scramble more based on protection. Could potentially play another position but has good upside as a quarterback. If the talent gets polished, he can start at a high-major level and have a chance to play beyond college.”

McCulley was in Bloomington in January for a junior day and came away impressed with what Tom Allen and his staff had brewing in Bloomington. He built a connection with both Allen and offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan and the ‘LEO’ culture Allen cultivated in the football program.

McCulley threw for 1,958 yards with 17 touchdowns and just three interceptions while completing 140-of-224 passes (62.5%). He also made his mark rushing as he ran for 563 yards and two more touchdowns on 115 attempts. He also had a 91-yard touchdown catch. Simply put, McCulley can do it all.

McCulley is IU’s ninth commitment in the class of 2021 and the Hoosiers highest rated recruit in this cycle. The Hoosiers class got a boost from 62nd nationally to 53rd.
