Tom Allen knows that keeping talented prospects in-state and playing for the state’s flagship school is a big deal. While some in-state prospects had to be pursued for a long time before joining the Hoosiers, others are just waiting for the opportunity. Caleb Murphy, a defensive end from Campbellsburg, received an offer in June and pledged his commitment to the Hoosiers that same day. The 6’5” athlete knew there was nowhere else he wanted to play.
“I spent most of my life an hour south of Bloomington and have always watched IU football games and every time I got a chance to up to Bloomington, I loved the culture of the team, the coaches and they have a great media school,” Murphy said after his commitment.
As a junior, Murphy had 84 tackles with 11 tackles for loss. He played both ways for West Washington High School and chose IU over offers from Air Force and several MAC schools. He has a terrific motor and really good technique. I think Nick Mangieri is a good comparison but it seems unlikely Murphy will see much more than four games worth of action in 2020 as the Hoosiers return nearly every piece on the defensive line and adds in some players they are very excited about that redshirted this season.
