Will NYC elect an openly socialist mayor?

Trump assured Mamdani wins once he said to vote Cuomo.

Tonight's theme appears to be rejection of the lies, corruption, and chaos of the alleged pedophile POTUS.

It sounds like the entire state of Virginia shifted slightly left. NJ showed less shift, but still moved. NYC is going to elect the guy who provided the most economic populist message in years. This has nothing to do with corruption or Trumpian chaos. It's the fact that the cost of living crisis hasn't gotten better in the past 12 months. It really is that simple.

He was the most liberal President in modern history. The people on the far left have issues with anyone who isn’t a terrorist or socialist.

Where do people get this? What did he do that was so far left? ACA was an attempt to get pre-existing covered while saving private insurance. Anyone far left would have twisted arms for Medicare for All

What specific policies were far left?

Obama wasn't as far left as Nixon, so when do you start the "modern presidency." ACA stole from Nixon's plan, Nixon created EPA and OSHA. Look up Nixon's Family Assistance Plan.

He was the most liberal Senator in 2007 according to National Journal. His DEI push and discourse around race and other issues (see Michael Brown) fueled the backlash that put Trump in the White House. If he was more like Clinton, I don't believe that would have been the case.

ACA caused massive changes to healthcare and none of it changed the trajectory of healthcare costs.

Yeah, but times changed quickly in the Dem party.  In 2007, the most liberal Sentator said he was against gay marriage.  Compare that to the "moderate" Biden record on trans issues, etc. in 2020.  Biden's policies were more progressive/liberal than Obama's.

Biden is a human weather vane. Always knows which direction the party is moving and keeps himself right in the middle of it. He drifted left because the party drifted left.

100%

That sounds about right for a career politician. No principles... just electability.

Aside: Apparently this was the highest turnout in a NYC election in some 60 years.

Smart comments by AOC on the Lefty Network. She threw out a little red meat, but mostly didn't rise to the bait, and tellingly, kept coming back to the working class and the cost of living, and did not claim Mamdani was the future face of the party, but said that the party should have many faces, and that they can be very politically diverse.

Okay, per NBC exit polls, not quite as dramatic as I suspected, but 8% of NYC Trump voters went with Mamdani. (Also 8% of voters who approve of Trump voted Mamdani and 8% of people who identify as MAGA voted for Mamdani, so that's consistent.)

More from the exit poll, not to rub it in, but, on the most important issue facing New Yorkers:

Immigration (9%): Cuomo 52-26

Crime (24%): Cuomo 58-17

Cost of Living (55%): Mamdani 63-27

Let's just see what happens.

I don't see this as much different from the Trump "rejection of status quo" votes of years recent.

The system will limit his ability, but the fact that middle income NYers are feeling "gamed out" by it, speaks volumes.

When decent, income-producing Americans elect a pseudo-Socialist, because their 6 figure incomes merely keep them in quicksand...it might be worth an analysis.

@goat and if dems stick with that cost of living message they will continue to win.

What policies are the Dems currently pushing that might lower the cost of living?  Everything they have ever pushed in my life made things more expensive for me.  You can run on it all you want but at some point you must actually deliver or they will turn on you.

He’s the face. Policies that will now have to be defended or pushed back on by the Party

His message:

1. More government expansion in a city that already is overloaded.

2. Government-run grocery stores

3. Price controls

We will see how other prominent Democrats from around the nation square the circle

A mayor is the face of the party, why not the dog catcher?

Who ran for dog catcher? Yeah….I don’t know either.

Republicans will put him and his proposed policies front and center going into the midterms. Let’s see the candidates denounce the policies. He won easily
