Apparently budget cuts are, as they are for seemingly any politician, a third rail. He's going up against a pretty entrenched Democratic establishment in both the statehouse and city/boroughs. Good luck I guess. Playing chicken with Hochul who's already given him a $1.5b handout. I guess those free busses aren't going to pay for themselves.
NYC budget estimate for FY2026 is $127b compared to $115b for FY2025, a 10% increase give or take, a difference which coincides with the estimated costs of implementing Mamdani's (Madmani's?) wish list. I do know he is in for a rude awakening trying to strong arm Hochul with an either/or choice of two shitty ideas. But hey, elections have consequences and they voted for it.
A good friend will bail you out of jail, but your best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying "that was f***ing awesome"
Of course not. But it's just the slipper slope of making somebody pay more instead of looking at budget cuts to solve the problems. Additionally, it's just an excuse for landlords to ever increase rents, which is seemingly the opposite of what he's trying to accomplish. The wealth tax is a non-starter but he's going to what, blame Hochul? Nobody wants it outside of his Dem Socialist circles. Especially not the actual power brokers and property owners in NYC. There's plenty of landlords in NYC that aren't millionaires but he's going to treat htem like they are. It's not going to lower rents nor will the upkeep on the properties be great if the state siphons another 10% off the top.The Citizens Budget Commission, a nonpartisan think tank, said the suggested rate increase would amount to a property tax increase of about $700 a year for a typical owner of a one-, two- or three-family home.
Is that really so bad?

That's a higher budget than the entire state of Florida.
Time will tell & I may be eating crow down the road, but I’d be willing to place a wager that at the end of Mamdani’s term we’ll be able to point to more actions that are religion driven than socioeconomic. The socialist stuff was just to get gullible Dems to vote for him, his objectives will be to forward Islam in America’s biggest city…
Things are going great @goat

John Podhoretz thinks it’s a step towards property confiscation because of foreclosure on tax liens or having owners deed properties to the city…he’s probably correct
Crime out of control. What could possibly go wrong?

New York is a loss cause. This is the product of several decades of dumba#% politicians allowing in foreign socialists. Unsurprisingly their children and themselves vote for socialists. Biden was just brain dead and allowed the crazies in his party to run wild with it. This will happen to the rest of the country if the border isn't closed for an extended period. Immigration should be very limited to extremely talented people moving forward.
@spartans9312 Kind of sucks because Fla affordability will be gone. Old Fla blah blah blah
Such foreclosures disproportionately affecting the elderly, poor, infirm, and minorities. Sounds about right.Things are going great @goat

Welp. I don't think the sky is falling like some seemed to think would happen. Time will tell if he actually does a good or bad job but he certainly hasn't been worse than most of his predecessors...
Crime rate is down 5.3%. murders and shooting at historic lows. Petty theft down 20%
Balanced the budget by getting New York State to pony up more funds and his "2nd home tax".
Office and business leases are up and the economy is growing at faster clip than the national average.
Total population is down but not by a ton. 12000 people. 70% of that is international migration.
I'm sure not so great stuff is happening too. The point is that NYC doesn't seem to be turning into some hellish landscape like many here thought it was going too.
@mrhighlife bailed out by the gov with new taxes on the wealthy. Delaying city pension payments. Wealthy leaving. Many to Miami. Impact of that will be felt in the years to come. And let’s see crime numbers (which I won’t be surprised will be cooked) after the summer months.
Lastly he’s a mayor. The extent of what he wants he isn’t capable of implementing. Socialism isn’t a matter of first impression.
report back in a couple of years. It’ll be similar to San Fran. Give it time to sink in. People and businesses will say F this to the extent they can.

Total population could be down because more people than ever are leaving the US. People are also leaving more expensive areas of the country and landing in more affordable areas. That's been happening for a long time. I know two couples who 'retired' near me from New York about 8-10 years ago. They lived in these relatively small apartments in Manhattan forever and sold those and built houses in my old neighborhood where they lived like kings.
