Why IU is not a big time athletic school

@spartans9312 Saban was before NIL though, so kids didn't jump around nearly like they do now so he could build up that depth.

People may like NIL, they may hate NIL, but what it has done is not allow big time programs to stash talent that are good enough to play other spots because they now know that they can go and play while also getting compensation.

If you look at Ohio State,  their big question mark is on the defensive line.  They have zero depth there.   That's crazy to say for the defending national champions, but they missed on a lot of the kids they were going after.  It didn't bite them Saturday, but one or two kids go down on that line and they'll be in some real trouble.

NIL has basically made the lower levels the minor league system while also spreading out the talent for the p4 teams.

I would argue that it’s the immediate eligibility of a transfer that is the problem. Sure…NIL has an immediate effect but without the immediate eligibility these recruits would have to do a little more research.

@spartans9312 oh, that would be 1a with 1b being NIL.  Both are worthy of that top line for why kids leave.

Depth and development. Saban was a master at roster construction over the long haul. Not just building for 1 season. Therefore, his teams were extremely disciplined. Why? A lot of those players had been in the program 3 years or more. The Bama team played extremely undisciplined Saturday for the part of the game I saw.

Saban realized the transfer portal, worse than NIL, would impact his strategy and hung them up at the right time. He had guys that bought into sitting on the bench for a few years, then would earn their spot and rocket up NFL draft boards. That worked when you couldn't jump around like Free Agency.

Yep…Why would he want to do all the development work only to see the player leave and use those things that Saban taught against his team. Zero continuity. The system is broken.

Probably the biggest fumble the NCAA ever made (from my fogbrain memory) was not allowing schools to pay players years ago.

Just allowed the courts to take hold of college football.

Make them sit out a year and  fewer leave…that’s step 1

@carramrod You can’t be serious. . I’m sure all his players followed him from James Madison and then stayed loyal because he’s abusive. And all coaches take their players. Would be negligent not too.

@carramrod Well except for the fact some coaches have documented abuse and bad behavior.

@zeke4ahs

This is Farva thinking he's being clever, by making an unfounded claim and equating it to the accusations made against Beard and Wade and the like.

@mcm666 do you remember what IU was wearing in Knight’s last few years? They had Converse shoes (before Nike bought them) and Logo Athletic uniforms. For any misgivings he may have had, his teams weren’t going to be bought and sold.

I'm not sure a major college basketball program could even do something like this today. Even midmajors are scurrying to align themselves with major shoe brands. If for no other reason it’s viewed as a status thing for recruiting.

IUs mistake has always been hiring bad coaches and then holding onto for way too long.  By the end of year 2 you generally know what you have.  They also refuse to hire sure fire winners like Pearl, Beard, and Wade while other schools have no problem hiring them.

Character matters.

Did you say the same thing when Knight was here?

So you say RMK was a 'bad' coach?
