First, re the title, I’m fine with that. I’d prefer the legislature, trustees, and admin focus on developing a world class university (not so sure they’re doing very well at that, though).
But second, if you want to see what a real big time program does, watch Alabama football. I’m betting that if they lose two more games this year, they’ll buy out DeBoer and pay up for a new coach. They aren’t going to suffer through four years of this.
IUs mistake has always been hiring bad coaches and then holding onto for way too long. By the end of year 2 you generally know what you have. They also refuse to hire sure fire winners like Pearl, Beard, and Wade while other schools have no problem hiring them.

If the other schools cared. If the NCAA cared then I would care too but they don't. They let schools like UNC, UK, and Duke get away with murder for decades while we got a near death penalty over phone calls. Just win baby!
Did you say the same thing when Knight was here?
Tough one. No, I didn't. But I don't think his untoward behavior was indicative of a lack of character. And no, I'm not going to try and define my terms or draw distinctions. Knight was an asshole, but he stood on principle.

Sorry, I just can't go there. If we have to go that route, I'd rather just take a pass.
I'm in the same boat as you. I overlooked it then.Did you say the same thing when Knight was here?

One of Knight's principles was self-discipline. He was a tremendous hypocrite about that.

Cignetti is a giant prick. I wouldn’t want to open up the hood on his personal life.
Character matters when you’re losing.

@unclemark to whom? Losers? If character matters drop down to D3. Chicago was once in the big ten. Wash u the precursor to the big 8. I’m sure numerous other schools dropped out bc character and other things matter. But big time sports is dirty. To not “play the game” like the rest is just stupid. When those held up coach k etc they’re being fake as fck. the rat is so dirty and such a pos. The shoe companies are dirty. The programs are dirty. Trying to play it straight is just naive and dumb at this point. As unfortunate as that is
Knight was the lobster in the pot of cool water on a burner. If he had done those things at Army, I don't think we would have taken him, even in the early years it would have been a problem. He worked his way up to full on Gregory House.I'm in the same boat as you. I overlooked it then.Did you say the same thing when Knight was here?

Oh and no one thinks less of Duke as an institution bc the basketball program is dirty. Or SMU or Georgetown or ucla or anywhere else

Few pretty obvious reasons:
1) IU never invested in football. The cash cow of college sports was not a priority. Entire ADs are funded by quality football programs.
2) Football was not as popular in IN during 40s - 80s as it was in other parts of the country. It has really improved at the junior level and having the Colts really helped that.
3) The population is much less than in TX, OH, PA, etc.

What do you know about Cignetti that I don't?
