First, re the title, I’m fine with that. I’d prefer the legislature, trustees, and admin focus on developing a world class university (not so sure they’re doing very well at that, though).
But second, if you want to see what a real big time program does, watch Alabama football. I’m betting that if they lose two more games this year, they’ll buy out DeBoer and pay up for a new coach. They aren’t going to suffer through four years of this.
What a gigantic bundle of hypotheticals.
And we just fired a coach that we owed $20M to leave.
Abusive, you can tell from his demeanor. Stole the entire James Madison roster, low character.
Yeah, must have left JMU in a shambles. What was their record last year again?
"Character matters.
Cignetti is a giant prick. I wouldn’t want to open up the hood on his personal life.
Character matters when you’re losing."
don't agree but if he is
at least he's our prick
@carramrod you have zero idea how Cig runs his team.
If he was do abusive, how did he get so many JMU kids to follow him to IU? They have free will, correct? He can't force them to enter the portal while also making them come to IU when many of them had options elsewhere.
You're making zero sense.

I think we’re in wait and see territory with Alabama. It’s weird that Alabama’s relative fall aligns with everyone being able to pay players. Personally, I think the foreseeable future success for their football team will look similar to Indiana Basketball’s post 2000- present run.
@ohio-guy I don't think it's some big conspiracy that when NIL became legal, the SEC stronghold over football disappeared.
@unclemark to whom? Losers? If character matters drop down to D3. Chicago was once in the big ten. Wash u the precursor to the big 8. I’m sure numerous other schools dropped out bc character and other things matter. But big time sports is dirty. To not “play the game” like the rest is just stupid. When those held up coach k etc they’re being fake as fck. the rat is so dirty and such a pos. The shoe companies are dirty. The programs are dirty. Trying to play it straight is just naive and dumb at this point. As unfortunate as that is
”I would say the majority of major college basketball programs break the rules. Because of my role and because I’ve been, I guess, a sounding board for these things. I’ve heard it all. I’ve been there for these things. And with Bob Knight I’ve never heard a single thing, not first hand, second hand, third hand. Nothing. Not ever.”….Sonny Vaccaro

Depth and development. Saban was a master at roster construction over the long haul. Not just building for 1 season. Therefore, his teams were extremely disciplined. Why? A lot of those players had been in the program 3 years or more. The Bama team played extremely undisciplined Saturday for the part of the game I saw.
@spartans9312 no one knows more than Sonny. I’m not surprised to hear that re knight. Nike shoes and youth coaches. Camps. Then college coaches etc. so dirty. Adidas. FIFA. The World Cup. Dirty. They got their growth by being dirty and we are supposed to believe it’s not the majority of programs? I’d believe it if you show me a major football program wearing Wilson uniforms. Spalding. 🤣
@spartans9312 Saban was before NIL though, so kids didn't jump around nearly like they do now so he could build up that depth.
People may like NIL, they may hate NIL, but what it has done is not allow big time programs to stash talent that are good enough to play other spots because they now know that they can go and play while also getting compensation.
If you look at Ohio State, their big question mark is on the defensive line. They have zero depth there. That's crazy to say for the defending national champions, but they missed on a lot of the kids they were going after. It didn't bite them Saturday, but one or two kids go down on that line and they'll be in some real trouble.
NIL has basically made the lower levels the minor league system while also spreading out the talent for the p4 teams.

I agree. Speculating about a coach’s personal character from the outside is a quick way to end up looking like a fool. That goes for Cig as much as it does Will Wade or Beard.
Best to just pick the guys that win games.
@boogie I don’t know. The bottom is still the bottom of the p4. Tulane smacked northwestern around
