First, re the title, I’m fine with that. I’d prefer the legislature, trustees, and admin focus on developing a world class university (not so sure they’re doing very well at that, though).
But second, if you want to see what a real big time program does, watch Alabama football. I’m betting that if they lose two more games this year, they’ll buy out DeBoer and pay up for a new coach. They aren’t going to suffer through four years of this.
@jdb You seem to be the Hoosier Huddle archivist (note the spelling; not "anarchist" - lol). You've got a knack for digging up old, interesting threads.
@bradstevens I hope you didn't bet too much.

Was trying to find a thread on Cig on the WC and that's what showed up first lol. Lots of crow to be eaten.

Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for. - Seamus Heaney, Irish poet and likely Hoosier basketball fan.

of course, I also believed in Archie Miller.
To quote the great millennial philosopher from St. Louis, "co-sign."

Building a team in today's NIL and Transfer Portal era as IU did in football and Michigan did in basketball simply requires Transfer Portal Mastery (TPM).
IMO, the TPM hero at IU goes to Athletic Director Scott Dolson who hired Cignetti and assisted him in the Transfer Portal recruiting. At Michigan, it was Dusty May's ability to hire top tier transfers who are simply stopping off at Michigan on their way to the NBA.
The days of the student athlete as existed in the Bobby Knight era are long gone as big money donors, NIL, and TPM along with the ADs and coaches who can master the system will prevail.
@hooky I wish we could go back to the old football board. I predicted cig would be a great hire. One of the very few predictions in sports I’ve gotten right but you could just tell with his Jmu results
@bradstevens and yea I’ve already given up on sports betting.
@larsiu though you know in euro soccer Barca Bayern city Madrid will absolutely win certain games each week. There’s no doubt. You bet a grand to win $50 but it’s basically a free $50. I wonder if that’s an angle
@hoot it has been fascinating to watch. It’s a restructuring. It has leveled the playing field for schools with means like iu and allowed them to wipe away a century of no tradition and catch historic power schools. That said it has gutted mid majors and destroyed any hope along with a number of p4s. You won’t get another another UCF with a ton of bonded seniors. Those kids will be long gone
Like anything else, it's finding value that's the key.@hooky I wish we could go back to the old football board. I predicted cig would be a great hire. One of the very few predictions in sports I’ve gotten right but you could just tell with his Jmu results

I wouldn't know. But that's what I've heard.
@bradstevens yeah he’s probably penning his book: you can make money gambling too!
