@goat defenders got on the other side of you. That’s what you had to wait for. Then you were good
Yeah, by that standard, the goal would not have counted. He was still ahead of his defender when the ball was played back to him. It was only good because the pass was backwards.
@goat I honestly don’t know. It used to be that in the case the guy who scored started from an offsides position so if he scored it was no goal. In order for him to score he would have had to have gotten himself into an onside position and the only way to do that was to check back behind a defender and then reestablish himself before receiving the ball .

Makes sense to me, but Daizen definitely didn't do that. He was offsides the entire time. After Osmond took the ball and moved to the front, the first defender followed, but the second defender never passed Daizen. Not even for a step.
@goat yep. But there’s another one when everyone is already behind the defense when the ball is played. You see it on break away with two players. Both are past the last defender and the one passes to the other and it’s good. I don’t know. I’ve never been great with knowing the rules. There’s a half field one too. Inside the line outside the line.

While parsing this, I saw this phrase in the Wiki, but without a citation to explain it:
"Now that changes to the interpretations of "interfering with play, interfering with an opponent and gaining an advantage" mean a player is not guilty of an offside offence unless they become directly and clearly involved in active play"
Like I said, no citation to explain, but it backs up your gut feeling that interpretation of the rule has shifted in recent years.
he was not the first to play the ball after returning from an offside position? What am I missing here?@larsiu he was “ onside” when the ball was played but I’m fairly certain that it used to be that you couldn’t come from an offsides position. He would have just had to let it go and turn his back. So he came from an offsides position and could never be onside. I’m clearly wrong in the instant case but I’m certain that’s how it used to be
we are talking about Celtics 2nd goal right?
What am I missing here?
that i had a ton of margaritas. i just rewatched it. i thought the guy who scored was in an offsides position (out of the play) when the ball was played and stayed that way when he scored. the guy who scored clearly got himself back into an onsides position when he scored. good goal.
There are other teams I root for whose fans are shitty. I went to a game in Minneapolis once, and the Vikings fans were just right assholes. Cubs fans are drunks. IU fans, well we all know what's wrong with them.

Yeah, after reading more about it, I think that's right, and I simply didn't have the rule down right in my head. But then, I've never really had a full grasp on the rules. You show me two tackles and ask me which one is a play on and which one is a booking, and I'll get it wrong 75% of the time.
@goat now tackles i know 100 percent without fail. altho obstruction is another one that has gotten funky

Welcome to the NFL.
@larsiu ha but he can play. honestly i like it better now. we got to see messi. most of the diego clips are beat a guy and get destroyed

Crazy thing is it was the first game of the 98 season. We were all excited about a new owner. We knew we had talent. And Brad Johnson had just dumped four touchdowns on a solid defense. No reason to be anything but positive. But here the fans were, throwing plastic cups at Bucs fans as they left in the fourth quarter.
