My mom still tells stories of her dad making her and her brother onion sandwiches--Cut a raw onion in half, put it between two slices of bread, and here you go kid, lunch!@mcm666 I got meatloaf because of CO's recommendation. And it is down home country cooking, with things like fried chicken and chicken fried steak and veggies covered in bacon (fatback or jowls also allowed as I often was sent to White Star Meat market 4 blocks up the street to get whatever she needed. In the 60s a 5 year old doing that must have been better accepted). And veggies had to be soaked in butter. Lastly all dinners HAD to have desert.
I wanted to make sure I remembered right so I also bought a cup of sawmill gravy. God what wretched stuff. All it says is cooked with pork drippings, must be ham because it tastes nothing like sausage or bacon gravy.
Catfish would also be southern. I ate a ton of fried bologna sandwiches growing up because they were cheap, or tomato sandwiches for the same reason. Or the real winner was a sandwich with softened butter in the middle (or margarine if cutting costs even more).
But meatloaf is as southern as anything.
As one of 7 kids growing up in a family that was dirt poor, we ate a lot of milk soup with bologna sandwiches.
Sure it was milk.
It was there last April.
So you're talking about way up north at the bypass? That one has been there since I got to town in '73. (Actually, the location was in what's now the AAA travel building; the current McDs was built right next door.)
@co-hoosier damn coh. i never knew it was walk up only. wow. fast food jumped the shark when they started hiring filthy people smoking in front etc; having weed come flying out of the car when they open it, and then walk into work etc. i don't eat fast food. above all because of the workers. it wsa yet another area chic fil a excelled compared to chipotle mcdonalds burger king kfc etc
You have to be at least 80 to remember carryout only McD's.

First McD’s I visited was on Stony Island in Chicago on our way to Comisky park with dad. Walked up, they had burgers, fries and shakes premade. Served as you ordered. Late 50’s.

I don’t disagree. High school buddy is visiting as I write this, we often reminisce about the good times growing up, quickly followed by kids nowadays don’t work as long or as hard as we did. A cubs fan and graduated Purdue, still good friends. Call me Mr. Tolerant.
