Wow! It amazes me to hear what people pay for tree removal these days. I removed a couple trees on my grandfather’s farm while in college. Got no pa, but I was fed well!@aloha-hoosier Having the whole interior of the Georgia house painted. Only Fernando, the crew (six total painters) leader, speaks passable English. Now, I imagine there will be a similar occurrence as a tree fell on the roof of our house in Cincinnati. I had to return a few days later, after our agent worked out the details for the tree removal and tarping. (An invoice of $25,411.32 for the tree removal has me feeling a little homicidal.) Structural engineer coming tomorrow to determine the damage so roofers can bid. If the experience of the divorcing couple down the street who had their roof replaced three days ago is representative we’ll have another Mexican extravaganza and fiesta going on while the work is done. Communication will be problematic.
I’m hopeful that everybody is legal but I wouldn’t be surprised if fewer than 50% meet that standard.
At least they won’t be driving semis, making illegal turns and killing people on the highways . . . .
I hope it works out for you.
@aloha-hoosier about three years I had two trees removed. $3,500 a tree. Or $2,500 leaving the stump. Ex was out of town on a girls’ trip. I said leave the stumps. I don’t give a shit. She came home and had a fit. They charged me 2 grand each to come back out and remove the stumps

That's crazy. Did you get a bid up front? I serve on the board of a small nonprofit and we had to have 6-8 trees removed after a storm a couple years ago. They had to maneuver around a couple buildings and used a state of the art cutter and grasping machine on a big boom to reach out and remotely do the cutting and removal. We didn't pay anywhere close to that.
@mcm666 I wish it had been a mountain lion.
Getting an education in what I would call insurance “fraud.” My bride is still in Georgia while I’m now here dealing with this roof. When I got in Wednesday evening and saw the tree invoice I just about had a heart attack. Sent her a copy as she was drinking on the back porch/deck of our neighbors, who just happen to own a tree-line company clearing trees for utilities throughout northern Georgia and the Carolinas. When Michael saw the invoice he exploded. “Fvckshit, l would have taken our equipment, driven to Ohio, and with our time and mileage charged you $10,000 for one tree! Damn, $3,000 for straight-truck rental for the debris and $450/hour for a climber for 8 hours?!”
Damage doesn’t actually look that bad. Gutter, soffit, fascia and shingles in a couple of back areas. The roofer the tree guy called to do the tarping (and who way over-charged for the tarping - $1,218, when “it should be no more than $300-400” per the first roofer who later came out to inspect everything) really, really wants to do a new roof and is pressuring me to sign her exclusivity agreement and not have any other roofing companies look at things.
And we all wonder why our premiums are exploding.
Can anyone here play this game?
”[I]narguably patriotic”? Ridiculous. There is nothing patriotic about rioting at the Capitol, assaulting the police and trying to disrupt the certification of a national election. Republicans and even President Trump rightfully denounced the rioting and those that committed violence initially until MAGA radicals, who knew it was wrong, decided to flip the narrative with constant lies and disinformation. It will forever be a black mark on the history of the party - especially on the MAGA movement. If you honestly think that was a display of patriotism, you need to do some self reflection because it was not. That was an unpatriotic mob. Period. Both are radicals, but only one is unpatriotic. The Jan 6 crowd is inarguably patriotic, you just don’t like how they expressed it. I think you’re conflating radical & fringe. Large segments of immigrant groups are radicals if you combine all groups/origins.
Define patriotism…
Why yes, what? My second sentence was missing the word "not" and was supposed to be, "You have any data that it’s not only a small subset? You don’t." You're pushing a narrative which isn't supported by any data. We're a nation of immigrants and we proudly fly the US flag. I do nearly every day from a 24' flagpole. I'm not flying a British or German flag where my ancestors are from. Why are you against legal immigration, really? Why yes, as a matter of fact we know how many rioters were arrested on Jan 6, 1575, with the FBI estimating 2000 participants. So, what kind of data do you have to confirm its a “very small subset” of illegals whose allegiance lies with their country of origin?
The FBI estimates that 2000 to 2500 of the rioters entered the Capitol building, there were thousands more outside the building, some manning scaffolds while they chanted "HANG MIKE PENCE!" Proud moment for you? It's an embarrassing moment for Republicans and the country.
I don’t get embarrassed by the actions of others, but I’ll take this
Over this
Any day…
damn, you must have really hate Mike Pence
What happened to him?
@unclemark We were in Georgia. A neighbor called my bride and texted pictures the morning after the late night storm. Our agent connected with one of the tree companies they have on their “preferred repair vendors list.” The tree company arrived later that afternoon, took a load of pictures and started about 4:45 and finished around 9:00. We had to get the tree removed quickly in order to determine the damage and to mitigate any further damage due to weather. Never offered any other alternative, such as removing the tree the following morning. I believe the weather was questionable at the time. If I had known there was no chance of rain later that afternoon/evening and I had been told a “business hours” charge would be $X as opposed to an “after hours” charge of $2X-$3X I would have taken the chance to wait until the following morning. Our agent is pissed as they have used these guys before and “this is not the way this should have gone down and I’ll definitely be talking with them about this.”
We have a $5,000 wind damage deductible and we thought that if the total cost was even just a little over we wouldn’t file a claim so we could avoid a future premium hit. That’s now gone with the wind, so to speak. Claim file now established - “Tell everybody to leave you alone and talk to the adjuster about their bills. At least you have a really good carrier - Cincinnati Insurance.”
The first agent-recommended roofing company guy was out Thursday and while he was surprised by the tree removal charge he said that he’d seen one for $48,000. Also said that while we both felt the charge was outrageous that he wouldn’t be surprised if Cincinnati Insurance just paid it - “It’s peanuts to them.”

So the insurance is going to cover it then? (minus the deductible) At least that takes some of the sting out of it I guess. Stiil, as you say, it's "fraud" -- aka price gouging. In our case, we had limited coverage for wind/tree damage, and got what we could, but still had to pay the majority of the bill. Regardless, it wasn't an outrageous amount. We got several bids, and the outfit that came in the cheapest was actually one of the big corporate companies rather than a smaller local entity.
Ha! That’s the hardest part too.@aloha-hoosier about three years I had two trees removed. $3,500 a tree. Or $2,500 leaving the stump. Ex was out of town on a girls’ trip. I said leave the stumps. I think you should provide your definition and how assaulting the nation’s Capitol and Capitol Police fits into it.Define patriotism…
I wholeheartedly agree they weren’t smart people and thinking what they were doing was patriotic doesn’t make it so. It wouldn’t make me a patriotic bank robber if I robbed a bank while waving the US flag and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
Rigging the system and abusing power is now an endemic condition of government and politics.
- IRS hassling certain political groups
- BLS rigging data
- Intelligence officials lying
- FBI targeting individuals because of politics or religion
- FBI falsifying FISA submissions
- Candidates for public office at all levels deliberately lying
- Officials deliberately leaking false information
- Officials deliberately classifying embarrassing information as secret
- Officials rigging crime statistics
- Officials selling themselves like cheap whores.
- No bid sole source contracts for political favors
- Elected officials encouraging systemic and violent opposition to law enforcement
- Performative politics in federal and state legislatures
- Federal lifetime appointed judges deliberately ignoring laws and procedures
- Massive coverup of an incompetent and senile president.
I can go on. This list is about conduct by our elected officials and public servants. They disrespect and diminish government so often that most of it isn’t even news. It’s no wonder we are in a swift current towards anarchy. We have more and more total morons as mayors, members of Congress and even one close to becoming president because of a rigged nominating system.
All of this has been done, and continues to be done, to retain and acquire political power and to manipulate the public.
And in the face of this, we are supposed to believe our election system is pristine.
@univee2 that's a known thing with the insurance companies and all that misery. the insurance companies here were routinely denying insurance claims after the tornado. lawyers advertising they will take the cases for a flat fee
You left off:
- Fomenting a violent assault on the Capitol and Congress.
- Strongarming a foreign leader for political dirt on your adversary.
- Selectively refusing to accept the legitimacy of the electoral process.
- Absconding with state secrets and attempting to hide the fact.
- Strongarming a state's head of elections to overturn the state's election results.
But otherwise, a pretty good list of what's wrong with our politics today.
@unclemark that’s why we should dismiss the pretense that one side is morally better than the other. They’re all dirty politicians. Vote on policy
Cheap. In my neck of the woods, it costs b/w $8-10k.@aloha-hoosier about three years I had two trees removed. $3,500 a tree. Or $2,500 leaving the stump. Ex was out of town on a girls’ trip.
