@arthur-dent That's a shame to hear about softball. I always think of that as the ultimate beer drinking sport. I'll never forget being a kid and my dad worked for Purina. They had a softball team. The Soyboys. Anyway my dad became good buddies with a bunch of the guys and they finally talked him into coming out. My dad was a wrestler. Built like a tank. Super confident strong old school dude. He came home white as a ghost. He said those guys were so damn good that he was petrified to take the field! He survived the season but said it was one of the most miserably stressful things ever done. Those guys back in the 80s took their softball seriously and were legit lol

Both before and after WW2, my dad had factory jobs just to play fast pitch. Columbus won the national tournament at least once. I recall Fast Eddie, The King and His Court, came to Bloomington about '82. I told my dad thinking he would be excited. He was very much, "he was a bum, we beat him like a drum back in the day, why would I pay to watch him."
But no one then played fast pitch, so he and his 3 teammates came in and played 9 guys that played high school and college baseball and would crush them.
But yes, we took softball very seriously in the 80s. One year we finished 3rd in a Bloomington tournament and won a trip to the next round at Mitchell. We lost our first game like 16-1. We were supposed to play Spaceport, a rival from Bloomington with Cam Cameron on it, in the losers bracket game. Their coach called us, they had lost by a similar score and decided it wasn't worth going back so they took the forfeit. We then lost our next game by about the same. Those guys taking practice before the game with a can of Bud in one hand and a glove on the other were far superior softball players. It wasn't close.

When the wife and I bought our first house we lived across the road from a guy that played softball for a team my grandfather sponsored. I was playing for a decent team of beer drinkers at the time. He asked me how much beer we were taking to the tournament. I don’t remember what the number was but he wasn’t impressed. He said when we went to play at whatever tournament it was we were going to that they backed one of those old cars that you could get 6 bodies in and said, “Your grandfather put 30 cases of beer in the trunk and we ended up with 3 divorces before we made it home”.

@arthur-dent That is hilarious! And yes they really did take it seriously in the 80s. And bars would sponsor teams and they'd practice! We used to have an old bar on the landing called Muddy Waters. They were a big sponsor and fielded great teams according to my dad. I remember he was all fired up because he was a big Little Feat fan and he said that Muddy Waters was going to award the league winner with a private Little Feat party and concert at their bar lol. They didn't win and he said he was the weakest link on the team so there was nothing he could do to help

It became an equipment game. The best equipment could make a bum a star. People were priced out and the ones that would’ve played into their forties never made it to 25. Therefore, their kids do not have the connection to the sport…death sentence
Cortez tells a hilarious story on that front. So our group played all the intramural sports and we were dynamite. Won flag football. Won soccer. Lost in the championship in basketball at AH. And then they played softball. I didn't. As they tell it the team they played all showed up with $300 bats and they were lucky to come out alive the ball was coming so fast at them off those bats. They got demolishedIt became an equipment game.
@bar-down we had a guy who had been a good high school pitcher. He played one of the two CF spots for us. He had a heck of an arm, when slightly drunk. Completely sober he wouldn't uncork it, completely wasted and he was a threat to fans, and players, the next field over. The right amount though and he could drop it on a line into the catcher's mitt.

The city is going to have to crack down next year. The fact they let all of those people just loiter on Kirkwood all night puts part of the blame on the city for it's response. Whenever you see a large group of this demographic congregating in those numbers in one area, you know the shootings are coming if you don't break them into smaller groups and send them on their way and even then it might be too late.

Single wall bats and blue dot balls was the best combo. Double-wall was ok but the composites were scary. You essentially had to play with a dead ball for safety.
We played in a big tournament in Bloomington that had some really good teams. We were good and had won our share but couldn’t compete against these guys who were already better then had to top-line bats. The tournament had a home run limit. These guys could hit the ball wherever they wanted. It’s taboo to hit the pitcher….everyone tries to stay away from up the middle. These guys tell us before the game to tell our pitcher not to move…we won’t hit him. But you also want to tell him to tie his shoes because if he trips he will get hit. They were hitting rockets right to each side of him…never hit him.
