I don't watch Kimmel. If I watch anything late night it is Colbert. Usually neither, though.

Some of you who claim to offended by dark comedy... how are you with Dave Chappelle, or going way back, Richard Pryor?

@goat Agreed on rebranding being impossible.  But Johnny Carson would have gotten the benefit of the doubt.  There's a reason Kimmel doesn't.  It's the spirit of the "joke."

So, yeah, I don't think you're wrong. I just don't think it's the only reason he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. I think he's also doing what he does in a time and a place where our society is perpetually walking around at a 9/10 on the outrage meter, just looking for that one little thing that can push it to the top so we can explode.

Too many people want President Trump dead!  Too many people have tried to murder him. There is no overreaction to joking about killing a president.  Some standards should apply.  As Biden is so fond of saying “this is not who we are!”

@shooter No they're inapposite to kimmel. this isn't about dark comedy.  or anyone else.  it's about kimmel.  a guy totally obsessed with trump who said something terrible because he is obsessed with trump and hates him.  i guarantee he wishes he'd be assassinated.  no doubt.

@co-hoosier and that is part of the context of what makes kimmel's comments so reprehensible.  kimmel is a terrible person.  he has a major network blowhorn and blows hate nightly into the community division.

But he didn't joke about killing a president. The premise of his joke was that Melania was such an unhappy wife that she wished her husband were dead. That's it.

@goat context why go there.  it's bad taste being generous more malice being truthful.  he has a family.

I am not aware of any joke about killing President Trump. Some, like Kimmel, have joked about Melania wishing he'd pass on from one of his many maladies so she would be clean of what appears to be an awful marriage (other than the money).

Edit, Goat said the same thing while I was typing...

I already said from the outset it was tacky. I never watch him, so I can't really speak to his motives. But I can speak to what he actually said that got people all hot and bothered, and he absolutely did not say anything remotely like CO.H claimed he said. If you're familiar enough with him to suss out that context, that's cool, I have no problem with you doing that. But that default outrage setting I was referencing? CO.H in this thread is an example of what happens when we're wound so tightly like that. He literally doesn't even know what Kimmel actually said. He only knows that he's outraged about it, and his mind simply creates false memories around that outrage.

Clearly Kimmel shouldn’t be fired for his roast

Roast?!  Are you kidding?  That’s not a roast.  Kimmel should be shitcanned.

I'll grant you the bit wasn't very funny.

But the joke in question was made before any assassination attempt and played into the same joke about married people as has existed for a long time.  Especially so when the husband is older and richer than the wife.  I'm guessing the same type of joke has been said about Bill and Hillary Clinton (although they don't have the sugarbaby thing going on).

melania is pretty demure.  she's mia most of the time. hardly a michelle obama or jill biden.  if kimmel had an ounce of class he'd issue an apology to her.  keep his disdain for trump but it's pretty obvious by her reaction she was hurt

@goat i think it goes back to newt, rush, bork hearings etc.  but that predated 24/7 news, podcasts, and social media.  like a zit compared to stage 4 cancer.

Trump called the joke "far beyond the pale."  Trump calling anything beyond the pale? Now that's funny.

Should Kimmel be fired for this?  Why or why not?

Trump and first lady rip Jimmy Kimmel, call on ABC to 'take a stand'

Are you asking if ABC should be forced to fire him?  Or should they personally choose to fire him?

No, ABC should not be forced to fire him.  If I was running ABC, I would fire him because I think he's bad for business.  I don't think it matters long term because media will just continue to decentralize.

Kimmel has been showing the most growth over the past year among late night shows, and despite still not catching Colbert in overall viewers, he's long been #1 in the demo. He's objectively not bad for business.

The article you posted didn't show he is profitable.  It's just an anonymous source claiming it.  To be clear, if he is profitable and the best option for the their business they should keep him.  I personally don't think it is, but I don't work for them or know the numbers.  It does seem to be a dying industry.
