@goat that's the answer then. his speech is protected. i don't think his show is a bane to the community that it calls into question their licensure obligations to the public. there's countless alternative voices. and he's profitable. so if i'm disney i keep him. altho i have to wonder how many additional viewers he might have if he toned it down, how many additional disney attendees would be out there. jordan and messi aren't stupid.
Of course he should be fired. Maybe he and Jaden Ivey should do a point/ counter point show on PBS.
The coarseness in public discourse needs to be addressed. Kimmel is a commercial commodity, at the very least the sponsors should stop funding him. Rush Limbaugh lost sponsorships for less.
@co-hoosier Funny you mention rush. rush was the start of all of this. ignoring the constl protection and focusing solely on teh business ethics it's a very different milieu today
Trump called the joke "far beyond the pale." Trump calling anything beyond the pale? Now that's funny.
Should Kimmel be fired for this? Why or why not?
Trump and first lady rip Jimmy Kimmel, call on ABC to 'take a stand'
I don't think it matters long term because media will just continue to decentralize.
I (mostly) hope you're right but I just have this sinking feeling AI is going to keep media under just a few roofs. Needing cutting-edge tech will jack up the cost of entry. The new generation of Media Barons will care even less about journalistic integrity than the current jergoffs do. We're being sold on personalized experiences, audience participation, yada yada, but the Masters of the Universe will move mountains to keep messaging under their control. Love him or hate him, Musk fits the bill.
He Who Controls the Data Centers Controls the World
Trump is the gheyist POTUS ever. He’ll pout about anything. Poor little weenie.
Clearly Kimmel shouldn’t be fired for his roast because it’s attracted this much attention. That’s the whole point of entertainment nowadays.
Was Kimmel funny? Matter of taste, as always.
Clearly Kimmel shouldn’t be fired for his roast
Roast?! Are you kidding? That’s not a roast. Kimmel should be shitcanned.
@co-hoosier umm yeah. i get that and have written as much about five times in this thread. so what grounds do you suggest abc use for termination? they don't care for his viewpoint? bad taste? do you watch tv. fear of reprisal from the fcc? good luck to the gov bringing that. kimmel sucks. firing him isn't necessary.
there's only one reason for abc to can him. money. if he loses them money or they can make more elsewhere
Pretty sure Melania liked the widow joke. Two thumbs up there for her. It’s the unveiling of the portrait she didn’t like.

I'm skeptical that toning it down would do much at this point. Because, honestly, what he said wasn't that bad. Just a tacky joke. I mean, 500 years ago, it would have technically been treason and cost him his head. But today it's really a nothingburger. And when got suspended for the Kirk thing? He didn't really say anything wrong. All he did was complain that the right's response to the tragedy was to immediately cast blame and turn it into a partisan issue, before anyone even knew what had happened. And he was right. We saw it here. A thread was started about the Kirk shooting almost immediately, and the general tone of the OP and the first respondents was "Fuck you, liberals, you did this."
Anyway, I'm getting off point. My point is this: besides the fact that we've all become giant dicks to each other, we've also all become way too sensitive, too. So a tacky joke gets blown out of proportion. Daring to touch on a raw topic gets misrepresented and threatens cancellation.
So, yeah, Jordan's famous political disengagement was, I'm sure, a wise business move. But I don't know that following that model would help a lot of these folks, anymore. So long as Kimmel is on the air, people who don't like him will find something to get outraged about, justified or not.
@goat I'm not as dismissive of kimmel. his entire schtick is trump hate. and i've heard him enough that he truly has tds and is coming from an evil place. so context matters. he is a bad guy who contributes to the divisiveness we have in society today. doesn't mean he should be fired. we're all adults. and we can have bad guys amongst us who make things worse not better. that's kimmel

I'm not saying he isn't partisan, or perhaps even malicious. I'm just saying people are having a severe overreaction to what he actually said. And I think even if he did tone it down, people would continue to do that. I think the ship has sailed on him rebranding as Johnny Carson come again.

Social responsibility? This is Disney not Salon.
