Playing the “Big Game” early is a sucker bet that hopefully our AD will Never bite on…
For better or worse, perception matters. Playing these big marquee matchups gets teams on a lot of national radars and earns them a lot of money. And if teams are jockeying for playoff seeding at the end of the season, scheduling definitely matters. College football is still partially judged like a beauty pageant and when people are comparing strength of schedules, quality out of conference matchups to determine seeding for the playoff all that stuff it matters.
Unless they totally crap the bed in the SEC, Texas guaranteed a relatively high seed is there's to lose by beating OSU this past weekend.

Cig always struck me as an "Any team, any time, any place" kind of guy.
Not a "We need to tailor our non-con to make sure we're not biting off too much, too early" type.

Paying inferior teams to take a beating is nothing new. It's buying a W, but everyone does it. And we got the intended result. Rutgers paid UMass one and a half mill and got its ass kicked.

I wish teams had a better version of the dynamic pricing set up OSU uses. OSU charges more for big games. They never lowered the prices on the gimme/cupcake games though. No school will actually offer a discount on tickets though. I'd imagine hardly any team making money on ticket sales does. I know the Bengals charge the same regular season prices for preseason games, which seems like highway robbery to me.
You can pick up crap on the side of the road any time you want.
I only did a quickly sampling, and it looked like Oklahoma State, for example, is booked out entirely for 3+ years. In contrast, there are a few that aren't (GA tech was one).

or indiana at 9-3 with losses to ohio state the conf championship game and a top nonconf team. georgia or whatever. i think teams are scared of that third loss regardless of who it is to

Teams have a right to be fearful of three losses because that's usually a deal-breaker for the CFP.
I was listening in my car to the Alabama broadcast of the SEC championship game last season. The announcers were practically crying at the end of the game, convinced that 'Bama would miss out after their third loss. 'Bama got a break, though, because loss #3 was in a championship game.
The ONLY things that matter are having a high ranking in the first CFP poll that comes out (this year) on November 3 and to keep winning going forward. The first CFP ranking, while not necessarily the equivalent of the AP poll at the time, usually follows AP pretty closely.
We began the season at #6 in the AP. We've already moved up to #4 with our two wins against shitty teams.
On November 3, no one (except maybe Paul Finebaum, ha ha) will care who our OOC wins were against. We just need to secure a high ranking at that time, and then take care of business the rest of the way. That's how it works.

1. i think they should get rid of conf championship games
2. i don't think teams should be be punished for playing a good non conf game.

Listen....read my posts, all of them, and you'll learn something. The weak schedule makes it easier for IU to go 11- 1 and they're in automatically. The trade off is we're out more years than we're in at 10-2.

When it comes to football (real football), Bitcoin, or BBLs I'm the expert. We need to scrap teams like Howard and schedule a tier 1 program. We should try to play Bama, Auburn, Texas, Florida, or several other teams in early September. The campus would be buzzing and it would be great press for the program. Not to mention they'd be great places to visit for a game as well. Cig dodging ND was weak sh#t. We're not chumps anymore. We're literally the best f#cking team in the country. We shouldn't be afraid to play one difficult game in the non-conference.

I agree with this. IU needs to get a non-Big Ten Power 4 conference team to do a home/home series. Bring someone like an LSU or Oklahoma to Bloomington. It'd likely be THE marquee matchup of an early season weekend and a win goes a long way toward covering up a possible trip up against a Big Ten opponent.
