Yes. Howard game was dumb. I could see a game vs WKU, Ball St. Indiana St. or Butler on a rotation basis but not more than 1 per season. UNT now dwarfs any of those 5 schools.
North Texas is on the rise and almost made the playoff last year. They appear to have pushed their way as one of the better programs in the AAC which has some solid FB. Let's see if they keep it up. UNT coach last year (Morris) and plenty of that team went to Okla. St. Didn't they just beat powerhouse Oregon. This new team and coach at UNT looks solid again after such turnover. IMO, IU should try to schedule one of the better schools from these 2nd tier conferences no matter how far the school is from Indiana. Any school that has Kathy Ireland as a kicker in their stadium gets my vote for being on the schedule.
It might be good time for IU to have some non conference P4 games against other P4 big boys on the schedule while Cig is here and they can get them. TV exposure in these kinds of games is huge for recruiting. I would not lock into UK as that P4 team yearly but understand playing them, UL or cincy from time to time.

Big games in September? Screw that. I want IU playing immensely consequential games in December and January. Making the CFP should be the singular goal every season. An early season game against a P4 opponent doesn't, by itself, further that goal. In fact, the downside to a game against a power team early in the season is much greater than any upside.
3-0 in the non-conference schedule (regardless of the quality of the competition) and 7-2 in the B1G is a virtual lock for the CFP. 2-1 and 7-2 will leave us on the outside looking in most seasons unless and until they expand the field.
