It's only slightly cheaper and Maybe as hard to be "good" at it. But you get outside on the water, it can be very Zen and peaceful, and occasionally you get to kill something.
When I was very young, we lived on this little house outside LaGrange on a small lake (Cline Lake for those familiar with the area), and we used to fish for bluegill. One day we caught like 50 of those little bastards. Had a few for dinner, and my dad got this bright idea that we should keep the rest alive and have fresh fish every night until we ran out. So he filled the bathtub with water and dumped them all in there. He'd never owned an aquarium or anything. I think by the time we woke up the next morning, they'd already started dying.

We went out the first evening and caught about 30. Forgot to pull the basket back in the boat when we came back, and lost all but three that were already dead. My uncle was livid with himself but we didn't really care--neither my son nor I like to clean fish.
Next day we caught about 40 more.

They are actually very tasty. Sweet, mild, not especially fishy, so good for people who normally don't like fish. But there's so little meat on them, you gotta clean a bunch of them to make a full meal. Too much work.
@spartans9312 Now, see, I'd take a bluegill over a walleye any day of the week. I'd take plain ol' lake perch over walleye. I never got the fascination with walleye.

That’s interesting. I haven’t had a lot of walleye but all that I’ve fried has been very good. I’ve caught a lot more sauger as they are more common in the areas I fish…they are very similar to walleye. I’ve never had yellow perch but assumed it was a lot like walleye
@spartans9312 Honestly, the differences are so subtle, I probably couldn't tell you what they even are. It's probably just a gut instinct - what you like and what you don't like. I just felt like walleye was kind of bland. At my old restaurant, we used to roast it with butter on cedar planks, and I don't think you do that unless you are trying to add flavor to something. But, but, but,... they were also one of our most popular dishes. Through every menu change we ever made, they never came off. We'd offer a special like whole rainbow trout en papillote, and people would say, "gimme the walleye." So clearly, whatever I was missing, other people weren't.

Hmm..I’ve never had it roasted. We always just batter and fry. I do think people tend to fry fish at a temp not high enough.
