@ohio-guy Agree with your assessment. In the current environment it seems the two most important factors to a coach are 1) how much NIL money do I get to spend and 2) will I get along well with the AD and President. The former we know is strong at IU and the latter I have no idea. Unless these people are jerks I don't understand why Michigan, or Duke, or anywhere is a better job than IU, or for that matter any school in the modern era that offers the two things I mentioned.
Michigan had much more recent success in Basketball than IU has, despite the momentary collapse at the end of Howard's tenure. IU Basketball has been in a malaise for a quarter of a century. To me there is no doubt that Michigan even coming out of an 8-win prior season could still look like a better program.
”I can’t imagine”, your words, & you’re right, & now you’ve moved the goalposts from reasons Dusty wasn’t going to come here to reasons nobody would. Sorry, but imagination isn’t all you’re lacking in this argument.
Where did I 'move the goalposts' you're talking about? By all means quote me.
I've always maintained that IU is a highly desirable job and adding NIL opportunity to the mix only increased that belief.
He probably would have been when you make no attempt it does not matter. The old boys club was going to take care of Bob Knights player no matter what. I posted before Quinn and his buddies are not IU guys they are bob knight guys and they do not care about IU hoops unless its one of their guys. I would not be shocked if quinn had a little smile on his face seeing dusty win it and thinking thats karma to mile brand.
I think this is a fair assessment about the inner workings of the IU administration. I don't subscribe to the idea that IU is fixed to middle-of-the-road or less status from here to eternity like others here seem to be. If Michigan can hire someone who can take over a program that won 8 games and finished 18th in the Big Ten two years ago and win a national title, the right coaching staff could do something like that at IU too. IU's athletic department has the resources and the alumni/fanbase are hungry for a winner. It's not like IU is Central Michigan or something...
Maybe but its not happening with DD so you will have to wait til the next hire. But if IU is good at one thing its making the wrong hires over and over again. Guys like Dusty to not come around very often so when you do you better grab them while you can. That is what Michigan did. I am under the opionion quinn and his buddies who still get worshiped dont care about IU hoops the only care about bob knight and now in a way I would not be shocked if they do not mind seeing the state of the program as karma for firing knight. Honestly I am just sick of giving these guys props for something from 50 years ago when I dont think they actually support the program.

IU was in the championship game and made a sweet 16 in that time. OSU and IU fans both lament not making the right moves to hire Dusty when it seemed like they had a chance. When Michigan fired Juwan Howard, I'd say most people would have thought both OSU and IU were better jobs than an 8 win Michigan team. All things being equal, if all three jobs were open back then and offered the same salary, I'm not sure Michigan wouldn't still be looked at as the third best job in that scenario. Michigan's administration was still reeling from the Connor Stalions fiasco then too.
@ohio-guy Granted but Michigan in the Beilein and early Howard years had multiple regular season championships, multiple B10 tournament championships, multiple S16s, several final fours. That's much more consistent success than IU had during that time. Especially coming out of the Miller/Woodson era.

I think the verdict is still out on DeVries. See what he does this year. I agree that there isn't a long runway for coaches in this day and age. If we're having a similar conversation about him next year at this time, I'd tend to agree with your assessment.
I also agree re: Dusty. Good coaches are hard to find.
IF DD goes say 20-14 and slips into the tourney I would not call it a success. It would be a very marginal improvement. If you are a good coach making the tourney 90% of the time should not be that hard.

Michigan had great success under Beilein ( another coach we could have hired) making two sweet sixteens, two elite 8's, and two national finals. We have not been to the final four since 2002 and only once since 1993. In the last twenty five years Michigan has had way more success. I think Howard made an elite 8 and a sweet sixeteen.
@ohio-guy Michigan was certainly coming off a horrid season, but that program has been far more consistent and stable than IU this century. Like any other coach, May wants to win ... and he had a better chance to do so at Michigan, as he has proven.

The more I think of it IU really is not that attractive of a job given the last 25 years. The only thing it has going for it is they will make you one of the top four or five paid coaches in the big ten. Heck they even made a guy who never coached a college game in his life one of the top paided coaches in the league. So you will certainly at least get rich in this job.
@arioznahoosier4554 I don't understand why the last 25 years matter. The portal and NIL have changed things dramatically. Resources are more important at this stage than history. How else do you explain the emergence of IU Football, Vandy, etc. Basketball will see a similar trend.
In this day and age, as both Dusty and especially Cignetti have proven, I don’t think it makes a bit of difference who has the better program. Also for Michigan, basketball will always be second. But the point being, as long as you have a good fan base ( ours is better) and financial resources, who cares which program is better?

I cannot say for sure why they matter but we did not get any of the top guys last spring or in the fall. So it has to be something yes money but likely more than just money. You also need a dynamic exciting coach who can sell kids. Cig has that.

Agreed. See what this year yields. In this new environment there's certainly no need to wait beyond year two to make an assessment.
