Winning will attract guys. Chicken and the egg problem... Guys aren't going to choose Michigan solely on the cash. They see excitement and a chance to win big. Just like the player pool available to Cig didn't go up in quality based only on the dollars.
Seem to need both though. Players aren't going to take much of a discount, but if four or five schools are offering similar dollars, need that draw of being a championship level team.
Depending on who leaves, and who else they could get in on... Kellen Pickett from Wright State, could be a good value guy to get in on. Freshman of the Year in their conference. Active rebounder. 6-9. From Blackhawk Christian (Matt Roth is the coach there).
He's NOT the answer to competing for a B10 title... so if we'd get him, and have to rely on him being THE starting 4 or even 5 man... then no.... But if we get an elite PG, get a couple really good or even elite bigs, and we lose some of our wing guys that could return. He could be a very good get. And I'm sure he won't command 1 million plus.
To clarify though... no clue if he's gonna portal. Just kind of always assume players like him will, when they show early success at the lower D1 levels.
Yippee, a guy from Wright State. Woody couldn't successfully coach a group of toddlers to crawl, but at least he went after guys who had some success at major programs instead of playing Russian Roulette on (alleged) mid-major "studs." That is a piss-poor recruiting strategy, especially if there's money to spend. IU's current roster supports that point. Sure, you might land a guy like Wilkerson, but that's not the norm. They were at mid-majors for a reason, and one good year at that level doesn't magically turn them into P5 material.who else they could get in on... But if he's starting next year and having to guard B10 bigs... obviously not.
But an elite PG, elite wing or two, elite big or two, 4-5 returning guys, 3 incoming frosh, and then Pickett becomes a guy that raises your floor, in my opinion.
There are a lot of very successful high major teams that have lower level college guys filling in the cracks in their rosters.

no. Actually I was trying to have some fun with that one. I'd wait on that kid until I've secured my 5/6 others. Would not count on him at this point though especially as an only going to be a sophomore.
@hoosiers94 Yeah, timing would be important, for sure. He just has Wisconsin/MSU glue four man types of vibes. Sisley could play a similar role though, too, eventually. Just a name that could be a decent depth guy.

@gthomas Hoosiers94 brought up a good point too about timing. We can't land a guy like this, first. And end up with him being one of THE main big men on our roster next year... like we did with Bailey. But if we land a high level PG, some high level wings and bigs, a guy like Pickett to round out the likely rotation could be a good "reach".
Appreciate you sharing your views on a kid who could play a role on the roster. As you noted, Pickett's intentions are unknown as are those of the wing guys from the current IU roster. Pickett could serve as an important bench piece. I can live with DeVries not filling the 7 or so spots entirely with power conference guys. The big part of the portal budget needs to be allocated to the elite PG and a couple bigs that are getting the $$$ because they have produced in high level competition. I am going to assume DeVries wants 13 scholarship players on the roster. With the 3 frosh, I'd like to see no more than 5 guys max from the current roster return next year. If such happens DeVries needs to get 5 portal impact players. Ideally not all the 5 portal guys are seniors. The PG and 2 Bigs are the priorities but the other 2 players must be capable to challenge for starting positions. Next year's team will consist primarily of new/returning portalers, but, according to ESPN, IU has the #18 HS recruiting class. True, it's only 3 of 12 spots, but that's encouraging.
Tbh, I don't see too many players from the current roster I'd want to return. Sisley and maybe Dorn and Ristic, but that's about it. This time around, I hope DD targets players who have more than one year of eligibility. Tough to build program continuity with a bunch of one-year guys.

Stud PG, 2 starter caliber bigs via portal/foreign pipeline. 3 starter caliber dawg/athletes at any position, from portal/late HS/foreign pipeline. 2-3 of the portal guys have multiple years of eligibility left. Let the returning guys and the frosh earn their way in to the main rotation.
