@jackskip23 Pat Knight is a great example of this.  He obviously wasn't "good enough" to get a scholarship on those IU teams.  And giving him one, took away the opportunity to recruit another player of higher caliber.  A player that could have made the difference, and pushed one of those Cheaney teams to a national title.  It would have been nice to have another big when Henderson went down in 93, or that same big more capable of slowing Laettner down in 92.  Obviously he could have had other kinds of value to RMK, and to the team.  But he could have done that as a walkon, or manager.

Not only do I disagree in general, but even with PK there was an unused scholarship that year, I believe.

Pat Knight was the Conor Enright of small forward/big guard.

He couldnt play very well, but he hustled.

Knight’s top three “another big” choices during that era all went elsewhere. He swung but missed.

that problem was created when Lawson and Funderburke left.  And Lindeman sucked

That didn’t help, but none of those guys were the three guys guys Knight chased and missed on. Would’ve been great had LF stayed but he never should’ve come in the first place. Likewise, Knight “recruited” Shawn Kemp, but that was never going to work, either.

The three (really four) players were Eric Montross, Glen Robinson, Chris Webber and Raef LaFrentz. Knight really wanted all four of them. Even getting one probably gets us a sixth NC.

Robinson wanted to come to IU. But two things changed that :

1. He was a prop 48 and RMK didn't want any part of that back then

2. on one of Glenn's visits he was waiting for RMK in his office and he had one of his feet up on his desk when RMK came in.. the general lit him up for it and told him to come back when he found some manners.  Glenn never came back ..: words straight from Glenn's mouth.

The Robinson story is true, though I think Knight was willing to bend on the Prop 48 deal had he felt GR was committed to school (by all accounts, he was). Knight had already had two non-predictors in May and Wilkerson and each had done well, and another he didn’t recruit who was nearly one in Downing. For the right kids, Knight was pretty open minded about that stuff.

Not questioning his heart or effort, but he wasn’t a Big Ten level player, at least not at the level IU was trying to achieve.

No knock on the Andrean basketball program but those '59ers have been dominant in baseball over the last few decades. Dave Pishkur is a coaching legend.

@tjinman1987

Here are a few guys I've taken a quick look at that might be of some interest.  All PG or 4/5 types.  No know IU/Indiana/DeVries connections that I know of.  The first guy looks the most interesting.  The last 2 I'd look at only as depth pieces.  Again, just a quick look so not promising a lot:

--Christian Bliss.  6'4" FR this year at Delaware.  Listed as a CG but has nice stats all around as a passer, shooter & rebounder. 39% on 3s.  Shoots almost as many 3s as 2s.  85% on FTs.

Others:

--Noah Fedderson...6'10" 230 lbs...ND State...17.2 pts/9.7 rebs per every 40M, and can shoot.  He's started 69/99 games there.  Not sure why not more.

--Jacoi Hutchinson...6'3"...Longwood...Has an all-around game with 3 pt shooting (31%) as a weakness, but does shoot FTs well (82% career; 86% last year)

@iureactionary Everything I have read or heard is that Shelstad is very likely to end up at Arizona. That written, what if Bill Self retires and Tommy Lloyd takes the KU job? In short though, not expected to be an option for IU.

@mushroomgod Now we're getting into the portal spirit! Nice names:

Bliss is an interesting one and I saw his name pop up on Monday as a portal entry. I don't know he was named the CUSA Freshman of the Year when he's not really a freshman. He was at UVA for two seasons. But anyway, intriguing offensive player. I'd guess he lands in the ACC or Big East.

Feddersen is alright...he's from Wisconsin and was a solid rebounder and efficient offensive player. Minimal games against quality competition and very middling results. I would hope IU does not pursue.

Hutchinson - played on a bad team so it's hard to know what to think of him but I don't love low-major guards that poor perimeter shooters. To me, it's unlikely they'd be able to get to the rim at the same rate they could against teams like Gardner Webb and then where does the production come from?

Not sure if this name has come up...I think so....6'5" Tyler Lundblade of Belmont, a 2 year starter is a hell of a shooter (93% FTs, 43% career on 3s).  The rest of his #s are pedestrian....anyway, the new asst coach from UL, Carr, has connections with his travel ball program.

@tjinman1987 Man, I am appreciating your portal information. I’m anxious to see a better roster, so I’m soaking in all of your updates. You also clearly know hoops with some good insight and analysis on players. I’m counting on the Carr-Devries combo, the considerable bag, and year 1 lessons learned by Devries to achieve a much better roster. Going to be interesting to see who stays from the current roster.

Know nothing about Bliss, but sports reference doesn't show any stats prior to this year.....

I'm with you. All we can do is sit back and see how the staff gets it done. Ten players will be eligible to come back next year, so on paper that leaves only 3 open roster spots. DeVries needs to have a few of last seasons bench warmers go so he can strengthen the roster with at least 6 incoming contributors.

Any DeVries or state of Indiana connections to UNC players that might hit the portal, after Hubert Davis was dismissed?  Sounds like they won't promote any assistant and will go "outside", so I'd expect mass departures.
